Animal abandonment
« on: November 16, 2017, 11:06:28 PM »
Someone is fostering kittens,...completely and totally breaking them to a litter box...getting them accustomed to human contact...then abandoning them on my doorstep.

I adopted two of them 7 months ago...I got them all the shots and de-parasited...they were fixed last month.  I don't regret rescueing them one bit..  However, two months ago another one appeared on my doorstep...all as above, totally tamed and accustomed to human contact.
I took it to the Houston SPCA who were dealing with Harvey tragedies. (this is unrelated to Harvey, my neighborhood did not flood one bit.)

Today is another one...the same...about 4 months old...I called SPCA and they have a hold on cat admissions at the moment...I am going to have to take this really nice older kitten to the Houston BARC.
This really sucks.

Matts typing a 21 paragraph reply,...stay tuned

LOL!!!  Is this thread a trap?  :P

Wow.  Isn't there a better option than dumping the kittens on a random doorstep?  ???

At the same time, I guess from their perspective, what is the alternative?  Putting them down somehow?  They probably think that if they get lucky and find someone who will care for the kittens, that at least they won't die.  Of course they are rolling the dice to think that, but hey - looks like at least you helped out before, so they decided to do it again.  Was there any way of them knowing that you cared for the kittens?  If so, maybe that is why they chose your doorstep again.

sync pulse - do you know how old the kittens need to be to get shots and all the rest?  I told my friend that I would help her get rid of her two brother kittens.  I figured I could enjoy having kittens for a couple of weeks, and then find someone to take them.  Maybe rinse and repeat with another litter later.  I decided to keep one of the brothers.  That was four weeks ago.  He was eight weeks old then, so he is 12 weeks now.  Do you know if he is old enough to get his shots?  I just realized I haven't brought him in yet for his shots.

oh yeah,... take them at the next chance you get.

The shots are a series spread over two visits, as are the de-worming and such.

You deal with fleas by spreading their fur between their shoulders to the bare skin and put some gel you get from the vet on it.  You apply it between their shoulders so they can't lick it...also keep them separated for an hour or two.

At 6 months for little boys....you get them neutered.  Some people will flinch at this, but with dogs, cats, and horses, you don't want to deal with unneutered males.

For little girls 4 months for spaying.  And little 4 month old kittens can indeed get pregnant.

After the two initial visits and fixing, you want to take them in every 6 months to a year, and you will have to get a prescription written for the flea gel.  The flea gel is important, it is the only good way to deal with fleas.  They will also check for parasites.  They...run a skinny plastic probe up their butts.

The best way to keep cats, if you can do it, is to have a pair.  By far, a pair of cats are much less trouble than a bored single cat.  They roughhouse together which prevents them from clawing inanimate objects. They also develop a sense of how hard to play when they play with people from their play fighting together.

Thank you for the information.  I will get on it immediately.

The kitten I kept has an amazing personality.  I think he would produce amazing kittens himself.  Is it possible to have him produce a litter?  Someone said if you get a cat or dog neutered before they use their reproductive potential, they won't know what they are missing.  But if they use their reproductive potential [mate, and have babies], that they will know what they are missing, and they may be changed as a result.

Do you have an opinion on that?  He has such a great personality, that I would honestly love to see how his children turn out.

That's really cool of you to take in two of the kittens.  Did you even want kittens, or was this pure happenstance?  I have to say, I have quite enjoyed being a kitten owner so far!

Unless the animal is a pure bred with papers, I am slow to advise breeding.  With pure breeds, if you have a desireable animal, you can charge stud fees.

But the reality of unfixed critters is:

With horses, stallions are nearly unrideable...every male saddle horse I have ever seen was "gelded".

With dogs and cats, unfixed males will piss and shit over things to mark their territory...like sofas, carpets, telephone and ethernet outlets (for real man!), and your bed!...just to name a few things.

It was happenstance...I could tell instantly these cats were siblings and had already bonded.  They both had separate fathers so they are very different.

Just as an aside, it is possible for all the siblings in a litter to have separate fathers...Each time momma kitty puts out during a window of opportunity, a different kitten.

Put an ad in the paper - free house trained kittens to a good home.

Some cities like Houston, don’t have the catch and release.

Cats are effective predators.  You can set them down and they'll go about their business just fine, killing shit, and fucking other cats.

If you're a cat person I'm sure that's not what you necessarily want to hear.  Yes, it's crappy of whoever abandoning their cats.  Peculiar that they keep coming to your house.  Almost like someone is playing a joke on you.  If not that it's got to be one of your close neighbors.

I got my kittens desexed at 5 months old. They go on heat earlier due to all the seasons being messed up here.

It's a nationwide effort and yes, Houston is part of that effort.

Just about every major city has cat rescue/adopt organizations.  Many people are doing this on their own with money out of their own pockets.  I have a few family members that do this.

How hard is it to properly take care of an animal ffs. Get them spayed/neutered, feed them, show them some attention and you're golden. No idea what is wrong with people abandoning living creatures to potentially die. It's sick.
