Give the money back?
« on: December 12, 2017, 10:15:41 AM »
Last night, I bought a salad at a deli. When I bought my lunch about half an hour ago, I realized that the girl who rang me up last night must have given me too much change back. The salad was about $8, I paid with a 10 and she must have given me a 20 and a 1 back  ??? .

If this was just a place  within a few block radius, I'd just swing by during my break and give the money back. However, I live and work in midtown manhattan and the deli was in a part of the city called fidi, which is about 20 min away. So, part of me is trying to convince myself that shit happens, I overpay sometimes, sometimes I come out ahead, this wasn't something I planned or wanted, everyone will live. Of course, this young lady's job could be in jeopardy because her register wasn't reconciled appropriately. On the other hand,if I go down there and explain what happened I might get her into even more trouble. Or she might already have lost her job.

What would you do, getburgers?  Forget about it or go back.

It's obviously weighing on your conscience.  Do yourself a favor and go back and return the ten bucks.  Whether or not the cashier got in trouble for her screwup isn't your problem--you're not doing it for her, you're doing it for you.  It's only $10 but you'll feel better and you'll sleep better at night.  Maybe that seems silly, but, call me crazy, that's what I would do.

Just call them. Tell them what happened and say when you’re in the area you’ll return the money.  This way the chick doesn’t lose her job and you look like a fucking hero to them.

Why did the bitch think you paid with $30? Her fault. You reap the rewards.

Test 'em.  Call them and say you got short changed.  If they tell you to fuck off then keep it.

Beat me to it. That's what I'd do, followed by dropping the money off the next day when I was back there for lunch. People make mistakes, and who knows, she may lose her job for it. At the least she will have to come up with the short till money.

Do the right thing Al. You've got kids, how would you want them to act?  :-\

When they counted out the registered at the end of the day she probably had to put her own money in to correct the short. Drop by and give her the money.

I was heading to a football game and wanted sandwiches for the tail gate with the wife.  We ordered a bunch of stuff and walked out.  I thought she paid and she thought I paid. Driving down the road about a mile away I asked her what the bill was and she said," How would I know you paid."  I made a u turn and went into the deli and explained what happened. They didn't have a clue we didn't pay. The three people behind the counter thought the other rang out the stuff.

Customer service is dead dead dead. Cashiers don't even count your change back to you anymore- they just say the amount they are giving you and then hand you the money. F that.

It's completely their own lazy fault if they give you too much change. Never give it back.
