For the last two years whenever I'm eating certain foods especially potatoes the food gets temporarily stuck. I have too force it down with whatever I'm drinking. It's scary, first time it happened at work I thought I was really going to choke everyone said I turned red. I forced it down hard with 2-3 big gulps of water. This type of thing ever happen too anyone else? My father in law told me about a procedure they can stretch your esophagus.

Yes, you probably have acid reflux (GERD) like I do. They roto-rootered my esophagus a few times.
I had a steak tip stuck one time, mid-way down. I waited 17 hours hoping it would go down / dissipate.
After 17 hours dehydrated, had to go to ER... Was a fun time for sure...

I get this occasionally. Apparently there is a term for it as one of my clients was describing it to me one day and it was the exact same thing I've experienced and what you're speaking about above. She'd had it for years.

Last time it occurred for me was while eating cheesy Italian shells Hamburger Helper. All of a sudden I felt like I have something the size of a tennisball of food stuck in the esophagus, just before it went into my stomach... and it feels like the esophagus is being "stretched" when it doesn't "want to" stretch. Painfull as fuck, & I also start to panic a little bit at first, then realize I can still breathe. Then, when I go to throw up, nothing comes up at first and it takes me awhile before I actually get the food to come up.

Last time it happened I was at home sitting on the couch with a girlfriend, however I've also had it happen in a fucking restaurant with sushi :(

This has happened to me too, but very rarely.  Only time in recent memory was a couple months ago, eating a peach while I was walking home. I think I was distracted by walking, and didn't notice a "build up" until it was too late. By the time I felt the first twinge of pain, there was plenty more in the pipe.

It is a little frightening... it almost feels like your throat is sure to burst, but it always passes.

Lol what a story

Yeah, chronic reflux can cause esophageal strictures.  If you have a history of heartburn, that's probably the cause.  It's worth a visit to the doctor especially if you feel like it's worsening

Have you lost weight?? Aside from esophageal stricture there is always a chance of CA. Get an endoscopy.

I'm sure some getbigger's have a lot of experience with things getting stuck in their throats.

Are you implying that Getbiggers have implemented a steady diet of Kielbasa?

One other time was a cookout/party my band was playing. 10 mins before we start, I figure Ill get something in my stomach. 1st bite, piece of chicken stuck. Again, you cant eat/drink anything (blockage). Big sips of beer come pouring back out. Got real horse mid-way during 3rd and final set. Made it though... On way home stopped for some ant-acid gum, did the trick, helped dissolve the piece of dead bird just enough so I could get it down, thought I went to heaven. No surgery needed on that occasion... Voice was horse for days, it does some damage...

Happens to me with certain foods and has for years. Ones I ate a Metrx protein bar and I thought I was gonna die. I was in a grocery store and right after I swallowed it got struck. I had no water so I grabbed a water from the cooler near the check out. I figured a drink would help it go down but instead the water got stuck too. I kinda started to panic so I figured I got nothing to lose so I just took a big swig and the fucking pain of that bite going down was unreal. It's like it had to get past a certain point then all was fine. Needless to say I'll never eat certain things with out having water near by.

You seem to have GERD which can cause a stricture(s) in the esophagus due to acid reflux. The procedure is called an endoscopy. I've had several, as well as have had to go to the hospital with food (steak 2x) stuck. I could breath, but the food wouldn't pass through to the stomach and was lodged thus preventing me from even swallowing my own saliva. After 24 hours, I went to the ER (both times)

Watching what you eat, chewing your food carefully, etc, etc make a huge difference.

Have been to the ER once from steak.

Have had numerous occassions, always from the initial bite never going down.

Tough steak is bad but dry chicken is equally as bad. Always poor quality meat or poorly cooked meat makes the problem more likely to happen.

it can happen with sushi from the gluey feel of the rice.

i take the first bite, chew and wash it down. If it goes down im good to go after that.

it appears on days where i have high caffeine intake food gets caught more savagely.

I suffer from the same condition. One thing you can try is upon it happening, grab a diet coke and chug it. The pressure from the carbonation will often times result in a rather violent expulsion of whatever is stuck. The hospital gives you something similar if you show up with something lodged in there.

Caffeine is to be avoided at high doses for that very reason. I switched to half caf coffee 6 years ago and it has made a substantial difference.

Yes. Follow your father in law into the closet and he will stretch your esophagus

Not bad advice at all.

About 7 years ago I was eating chicken and foolishly it was a big piece I swallowed and I knew I was in trouble I swigged some diet coke and further fukked up situation ,it was in lunch room and I was choking nobody knew what to do,i heimliched myself into a high table and partially forced piece up a bit ,but I was in serious trouble still I freaked and got into my car 'I did not want ambulance 'to come where I worked and I figured I was sorta ok to drive,,hospital was good 10 minute I sped bad got there ,I had small passage way to breathe luckily but I felt a large lump right at lower trachea 'pained'as well.i had to stop along the way to spit cause I had saliva build up from the obstruction.i needed to go under'anasthesia' and have the chicken 'remaining portion'pushed down into stomach, scary ...I have some sensitivity and slight swallowing issues since.

Seems like this is very common. I thought it only happened to me LOL
I eat really quickly, am guilty of that, and for a while I was constantly choking on food, till the time I thought I was dying, it scared the shit out of me.
I now TRY and swallow smaller bits. It takes the enjoyment out of eating for me though, as sometimes , especially in a public place, im thinking about making sure I don't choke.
Hasn't happened for about 2 weeks, so im doing ok LOL
