They convince people that they need flu shots and a 1000 other drugs they really don't need. How many people has big pharma killed so far?... LOTS!
Cancer treatment is another fucking joke.
On one hand, I agree with the title of this thread. I used to work for a medical marketing firm and the way brands maneuvered around patents and trademarks and the marketing channels we had to establish on their behalf was completely unseemly. Some accounts weren't much better than working in fart powder and unregulated supplements. A huge part of our job was just keeping up with the changing guidelines so we would technically be operating within the bounds of the law.
That being said, I think the flu shot is worthwhile. For a split second, we debated whether or not it was worth getting this year considering the low protection rate, but with two kids, the decision was easy for us. Flu complications have such a high mortality rate. I'm sure most know this, but for those that don't, the reason the flu vaccine efficacy fluctuates from season to season is because there are multiple flu strains that constantly mutate .The vaccine is basically built around scientific guess work as to which strain will be the dominant one a year down the road. I'm definitely pro-vax, but flu shot isn't like other vaccines where the efficacy is dependent on the majority of population taking the shot so the virus can be killed off. So, I'd never try to convince someone to get the shot if they didn't think it was worth it for them.
