Emirates Airlines Order Saves Airbus A380 Superjumbo--For Now

Michael Goldstein, Forbes

John Leahy, the "trillion dollar man" of Airbus sales, has done it again. Just a week before his (once-again) supposed retirement, the 67-year old sales chief (his official title is Chief Operating Officer of Airbus Customer Services) and his allies at Airbus pulled another rabbit out of the hat. This time, after threatening to shut down A380 production, the magician produced the long-elusive sale to Emirates Airlines that will keep the line going for the foreseeable future.

The order isn't as large as Airbus had hoped. Instead of buying 36 to 38 A380 jetliners outright, a deal that fell apart at the Dubai Airshow in November, Emirates has reportedly placed a provisional order for 20 planes, with an option for an additional 16.

John Leahy, "the trillion dollar man", is the best Aircraft salesman ever.  Boeing can't wait for him to retire.  I'm glad the A380 will live on.

Bodybuilders are making more money in Dubai than they get from Flex magazine or Muscular Development.  How do they get to Dubai?  On an Emirates A380.

I think the biggest win for Airbus this year was acquiring fifty percent of the Bombardier CS program.  Boeing made a huge mistake pushing Bombardier in a corner with 300 percent tariffs.  It totally backfired on them.

Boeing screwed up and now they're playing defense.  Bombardier is better than Embraer.

Meh, don't think so.....Embraer is been doing great lately, Bombadier may be selling better in the Private jet category, but not sure in the commercial side.....American Airlines has been upgrading their mid-size fleet with Embraers lately

I will agree with you, the Embraer E175 is a better aircraft than the CRJ900, but the CS100 and CS300 are way better than anything Embraer builds.  That was the problem, Boeing saw that jet as serious competition to the 737, which is why they requested the Tariffs.  Bombardier had plans to stretch the CS series up to 200 passengers, and if there's one thing Bombardier know how to do is stretch things.  Case in point the CRJ1000.  Boeing knew they were going to have to split the single isle market three ways meaning a price war and very little profit.

I personally think Airbus should continue stretching the CS series and allow it to compete with the A320 and A321, but at different price points.  The bottom line is the single isle market, which accounts for over 75 percent of the commercial airline market, is going to become very competitive.  This is good for airlines and the flying public.

Embraer has had a string of hits in the business jet market with the Phenom 100, Phenom 300, Legacy 450, and Legacy 500.  In fact the Phenom 300 is the best selling private jet and has been for the last three years.  Bombardier has always been strong in the private jet market and they're getting ready to launch the Global 7000 and 8000 ,which will have 7400 and 7900 nm ranges.

the brazilian gov got involved too. they dont want to loose their aviation baby which i get.

its important for the government to stop foreign firms to buy up their babies.  - side bar i am glad trump stopped a chinese firm from buying money gram a few weeks back - gotta keep some companies away from outside predators

Boeing was the #1 stock in the entire dow last year. good for them

is the Boeing 737 BBJ out yet?

U.S. trade panel strikes down 300 percent tariffs on Canadian jets, dealing a blow to Boeing

By Aaron Gregg

A U.S. International Trade Commission panel struck down 300 percent tariffs against narrow-body Canadian jetliners, siding with Montreal-based jetmaker Bombardier in a contentious trade dispute between the United States and Canada.

The unanimous decision by the four-member panel is a significant blow to Chicago-based aerospace giant Boeing and gives an unexpected boost to Airbus, Boeing’s closest commercial competitor in the U.S. commercial airline market.
