Idi also kicked out the brown racist Indians from Uganda. Most of them,as British subjects, settled in the city of Leicester in England, where they went on to do very well for themselves.
Going by this Reddit thread, feel the expulsion was a popular move with many of the natives......
Do you think Idi Amin did a good thing by expelling Asians from Uganda in 1972, why or why not? (self.Uganda)
[–]litvinwright 3 points 2 years ago* My parents were young graduates at the time of the Asian Expulsion. All production and manufacturing was in the control of a highly 'racist' Indian class. Ugandans were not welcome to participate in the places of commerce. As it is in India, they aimed to create a caste system in Uganda as well.
The expulsion forced the locals to fill the gap and although most were not qualified, it gave the Ugandans an opportunity to shape the future of their country. A statistically strong economy doesn't in my opinion reflect a happy people. Granted GDP figures may be low but the average Ugandan lives a more satisfactory life, has access to more parts of the economy than a South African or Zimbabwean.
myrd13 2 points 2 years ago Probably going to get alot of flak for this but the way I see it... He did a good job in the long run.
While it is true that he set back the economy, average Standard of Living is not just determined by GDP growth. The Indians in Uganda currently own the largest companies and are the richest "ugandans". This directly means that the indeginous Ugandan is not doing as well
This problem would have been heavily compounded if the Indians had stayed. They would own a much larger stake of the income generating businesses in Uganda, so while it was illegal and socially wrong, It gave the average Ugandan an opportunity to make it big in the country
[–]myrd13 4 points 2 years ago* Do you know how shitty it feels when the rich, the people running you're country are non-nationals??? They influence legislature to fit their goals?? Having Ugandan citizenship doesn't mean they look at Uganda as their first country
While many Ugandans do not openly hate indians... there seems to be an underlying mistrust about them mainly because they feel they are losing their country to them
Every Indian run business contributes large amounts of tax to the URA, em"ploys Ugandans, and buys goods and services from Ugandan owned companies."While I was still a banker I had an opportunity to manage the accounts of 2 of the 10 largest local Indian companies and the lengths at which they go to avoid taxes are mind boggling. And with regards employment 300,000/- to 500,000/- per month is a joke. how does someone even put together a living on that??!!
I don't deny that they have done a lot to improve the economy but what I'm talking about are the income inequalities. Before the Indian expulsion, they monopolised everything from manufacturing, to agriculture to services. Currently most of the service sector is run by locals, coffee is a fully localised business to name afew
Nwy I figure you're american..look at it this way, Imagine silicon valley, the huge tech companies(google, apple, amazon.), car manufacturing (GM blahblah), exon mobil, jpmogan, Cargill and all the other major players e.t.c were all run and fully owned by the Chinese with american passports, would you be comfortable with this statusquo??
