I was asking my youngest brother why Paul Thomas Anderson was getting so much financial and networking support in the production of Boogie Nights when the only other production he had made that was a mainstream Hollywood production was "Hard Eight" in 1996, which only had a box office take of $222,559 from a production budget of $3 million, according to Wikipedia, which links to the primary source of that information here:

Wow. Bingo. I was impressed with my brother's statement, and felt a little schooled - much like the feeling I just from reading your post.
Anything that makes the abnormal, the undesirable, the violent, the reprehensible look respectable is perfectly fine Hollywood fodder - more than fine; it is actually ideal.
Meanwhile, attempt to make a movie about a normal and stable White nuclear family with members that love one another and that involves people with a good sense of ethics and decency, and of course that's bad - we used to have shows like Growing Pains - or even Family Ties, where the son [Michael J. Fox] was actually the conservative one, while the parents were liberal, but we are seeing less and less of that these days.
On the flip side, White Guilt is NOT selling like it used to. The only movies really making money are superhero movies as well as big kids movies - basically the studios risk a minimum of $100 million, upwards of maybe $250 million on either of those two models, hoping to rake in at least half a billion return. Providing that they are successful with at least 3 in 5 under that model, they can continue to thrive.
So Hollyweird is going to have to ask if ideology is worth more than profit - or even survival at all, at this point. White Guilt movies are not selling anymore, because White people are sick of them. As well as smaller scale movies in general. It's a bit annoying to me to pay to hear how horrible White men are.
