Funny, I lived in Austin for 24 years, ranked 16... was a very diverse city.

We've spent time in Destin Florida, Newport Beach California, San Francisco, Riviera Mayan in Mexico, Costa Rica, Okinawa, and South Padre Island. We know we like the beach, clear or blue water vs gulf of mexico in Texas. Florida residents warn us of the humidity though we haven't been there in the summer. We all know California is expensive, fires, mudslides and earthquakes and state tax with high rents. But you can't beat the moderate weather. We are outdoors people so hike and bike trails, paddle board, boating appeal to us.

;D ;D ;D

My friend's dad was a cab driver, but it was sort of a secret he kept only to his family here in Thunder Bay, Canada.

Next thing you know, my friend came back after teaching English in South Korea, and started driving cab.  He said his dad was hiding a goldmine from him, and he was making $36,000 CAD a year as soon as he started driving cab [which is probably like $28,000 USD, but is a lot of money in socialist Canada, especially for a young man in Thunder Bay without an actual career].

That gives you a perspective of how cheap things are here - and how poor we are here, relative to big American cities - or even big Canadian cities.  Yet remarkably, I don't see too many of my friends getting into slum-lording.  I have no idea why.  It can be a lot of headaches, but I see no better option - not in Thunder Bay, at least.  And my roots are here, so I would rather stay here.  If not for renting houses, I wouldn't be able to live here.  I would have to move to a big city, and I would rather not do that.

So I was just saying for anyone who doesn't know how lucrative renting can be, they should look into it if they are from an area with cheap real estate...places like...wait for it...

...

THUNDER BAY, CANADA.  :D

 ;D ;D ;D

NOTE: WOW, I actually converted that CAD figure correctly to USD...the Canadian dollar must be high lately.  $36,000 CAD has been under $23,000 USD before.  :o

top tip Matt, if you dabble in the stock market, buy low, sell high..... ;)

Sint Maarten. Large enough airport to be pretty close to anywhere in the states relatively quick. Great food and people. That's if you're looking for out of America but within close proximity.

Many blacks on that small island? See the recent looting following the hurricane....

I like the beaches and waters of Playa Del Carmen Mexico but I'm not happy with having no real police protection and having to watch people put gas in your car so they don't rip you off. I am attracted to the constant temperatures of southern California but state taxes and high cost of rent is a put off. Florida has high humidity and unless you get down south, cold winters. Where would you live if you liked turquoise waters and reasonable living if you had to live on 8k a month?

Perhaps in a quality location in the Philippines:

most people speak English
nice weather and scenery
many very attractive slim young women around      ;D

Aki month has more than enough 2 live in San Diego. Mira Mesa in particular, where I lived,( or perhaps even Rancho Penasquitos, or perhaps Poway) with they 4 bedroom 2 story home with a two car garage, provided you what have enough equity from the sale of your phone home or wherever it is for a downpayment.

That's of course assuming you wanted to live in California. And Southern California, San Diego and particular would be my only choice.

Other than that I would choose somewhere in Southeast Asia. Either Bangkok or Saigon (if I were single... Vietnamese girls of Chinese descent are the most attractive IMO. Even more so than Thai. Lao coming in a close 2nd).

Thats a tough one man. Laguna beach is beautiful....doesn't sound like your into partying so I would say laguna/newport or La Jolla.   IF your single and like to party  then its Miami no question. I've been to every club in southern california and you just can't compare it to Miami in terms of quality and variety of women. Not into Cali beaches cold water isn't my thing. Unfortunately the food in Miami isn't great, LA/orange county have a ton of great restaurants and you have the mountains to hike..no one place has it all :)

Thailand.

It's not for everyone though, but being from a (now) Third World country there was never any culture shock for me.

I see that a couple guys mentioned Aquidneck Island and Nantucket-
The main town on Aquidneck Island is Newport. I lived there for a few years-Brutally cold winters-Local economy sucks-all based on tourism...lots of drunks live there year round-
Its good for the 2-3 warm months in the summer, and you will get laid a lot, but I would not live there-Also, its a liberal state.
Nantucket would be an absolute shitty place to live year round-Its a tourist destination during the summer, and travel is a fucking nightmare when the tourists come in-its also expensive as fuck, and cold as fuck-
Everything shuts down in the winter ( for the most part)
I lived in Boston for 10 or so years and would rent houses there in the summer months, which is the only  time to have an excuse to be there-
Tons of drunks during the summer, so if drinking is not your thing you'd hate it-
That being said, there is a fun weekend called FIGAWI...too hard to explain, but look it up-
Tons of ass and drunk retards...

And the road becomes my bride
And the road becomes my bride
I have stripped of all but pride
So in her I do confide
And she keeps me satisfied
Gives me all I need
And with dust in throat I crave
Only knowledge will I save
To the game you stay a slave
Rover, wanderer
Nomad, vagabond
Call me what you will
But I'll take my time anywhere
Free to speak my mind anywhere
And I'll redefine anywhere
Anywhere I may roam
Where I lay my head is home, yeah
And the earth becomes my throne

weird you made this thread today because I was just thinking this morning what would I do if money were no object.

-I would have basically a nicer home than I have now. basically a condo with a nice view, or if I moved back to montreal a nice house off the island not far from the water
-I would like the thought that I could eat anywhere I want any day rather than once a month, like at a good steakhouse
-I would volunteer my time rather than work, ie feeding the less fortunate would be a job rather than a once a month type endeavour
-I would have a nice car, I am simple but I( like muscle cars so a dodge challenger hell cat or a mustang gt500 wouid be nice

thats it really

My income with 2 jobs used to be not far off that number, these days not as much, but I am making a comeback of sorts so who knows, but I am  pretty simple even if I was a mutli millionaire I pretty much like to train, read, drink coffee, listen and play music, eat good foods and talk with people.

I don't have crazy needs like I used to

In Thunder Bay, Canada.

My suggestion to anyone where rent is HIGH and property is LOW is to get into renting houses.  You can pick up houses in Thunder Bay for around $100,000 still, and easily get $1,250 in monthly rent [with utilities being paid for by the tenant].

Also, Thunder Bay has a very low cost of living, and very clear seasons.  I love the freezing winter.  It's nice to just stay inside during the winter.  I think it helps me compartmentalize my life, and just not think about how I schedule what I do over the course of the year.  Big city life is not for me.
