illuminati, I think you know enough about bodybuilding for your opinion to hold a lot more weight than average. I also think that you are likely familiar with Jeff King's story - the 1983 Mr. Universe and Mr. America winner who was denied the right to compete in the IFBB. He was told that he had to work his way up. It's sad because had Jeff King attempted to qualify for IFBB pro status in 1984, he likely could have, but decided to pursue competitions in NABBA.
I think he felt that he had beyond proven himself to have a pro level physique - arguably, Jeff had a Top 6 physique by the standards of the 1983 Mr. Olympia! I think his denial of entry into the IFBB really turned him off from bodybuilding, and that is probably why he didn't compete after 1988.
Incidentally, Jeff easily was at the pro level from 1983 on, if not the Olympia level, so I can see why he would be bothered by being denied entry. I completely understand the concept of denying someone - after all, look at how long it took Bob Cicherillo to turn pro. By the time Chick turned pro in 2000 at the [Mr.] USA, he was almost 35, and was a TOP 5 NATIONAL LEVEL HEAVYWEIGHT amateur bodybuilder.
That's a Top 5 standing in one of the most competitive classes, and at the national level at that. So I can understand why Bob was on the side of Jeff having to qualify through the proper channels - after all, Bob did this, back when pro cards were WAY harder to attain [now we are ALMOST seeing a new IFBB: "Where Everyone Gets a Trophy! And a Pro Card!"
Bah! Once again, I have failed at my New Year's Resolution to reduce my Facebook and Getbig post sizes by 90%.
SO HERE'S THE QUESTION: do you think that Rory's close loss to Bob turned Rory off from attaining his pro card? I can only imagine being an amateur, walking in to a national level pro qualifier and having a guy beat you who was likely at the Olympia level while on the national stage competing to turn pro. You would think it would deter someone from wanting to keep going, lol. I think Jeff King didn't pursue the IFBB [and thus bodybuilding] because he felt insulted that he would have to climb up the qualification latter.
Do you think Rory's 2nd place to Bob deterred him from competing as often as he could have to turn pro? Keep in mind that after this contest, Rory only competed in four more pro qualifiers between 1984 through to 1988, with one final attempt at the 1994 Nationals, his last contest.
