how much is linux software?

About 5-15 minutes of your time, provided that you have a good internet connection.
I'm pretty satisfied with Linux Bodhi :)

If porn was part of Windows 7 task manager, then Windows would be a terrific operating system

haaaalpppp meeee i need my pc to be faster!

Never see this coming, but this has to be a first completely serious comment to you..

First a fact of the matter: you can't speed up your computer if you don't know what to do and why, so here is a checklist to use:

It would be nice if you would have some kind of facts about the speed you are looking for, like basic facts about the machine and what it is capable at best.

1. do you have antivirus- software which is up to date?  If not, buy one.
2. download ccleaner and use it. Do the registry check not once, but as many times it takes until it finds 0 errors.
3. before installing antivirus-software, use online- antivirus- scanners like F-secure, Trend-micro, Eset and run them all at once, at same time.
4. download Spybot - Search & Destroy, and run it. Let it delete all findings.

And after all this, if your machine isn't fast enough, go to control panel -> https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2601726 and uninstall all the unnecessary crap you don't need. Most of the manufacturers "free software" is crap you don't need at all.
And after doing all this, if your machine hasn't reach it's normal speed, then go to task manager and with google, check out what things there exactly do and remove what you don't need.

Point is that if you don't know shit about the machine, you can't do anything to make it better. For example, in the Intel processors is a mechanism which drop CPU's speed in half to prevent overheating, if cooling system has malfunction = if you have shit in the fan, your machine lost half of it's speed  ;D

Falcon, does your computer have an old SATA hard drive? If so you can definitely speed up your computer by leaps and bounds by replacing the old hard drive with a SSD drive.

A SSD drive will make a bigger difference than a faster CPU for average computing because programs will load much faster and the computer will just feel more responsive. You can also upgrade your graphics card if videos (hannah hays getting used and abused) and web sites are laggy.

But then again if depends how old your computer is. Some people still use computers that don't even support SATA. I know Windows 7 can run on 15 year old computers with the right graphics card, but not great. There are limits to how far you can stretch old hardware and still get a decent computing experience.

So ignore what ROPOOPOO said. You can certainly speed up your computer if it has a shitty, slow mechanical SATA drive or a weak sauce graphics card. GPU prices are high though so you'll get a better deal buying a whole computer tower with all the latest stuff in it from Costco, Sams etc.

As noted above replacing the HD with a SSD will yield a big improvement.

Also, I have found that disabling the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and Windows Search (WSearch) helps with speeding things up.

Make sure your PC has max RAM in it as well.  RAM is dirt cheap right now and can make a difference.

Just use WinXP - enough horsepower for running Mathematica and PeniiVidi3D concurrently - use XP64 if you need more ram.
Linux + environment, depending on the distribution, can be a big hog too, so be wary of hype and neckbeards.

You will be "tracked and spied" upon no matter what you use.

haaaalpppp meeee i need my pc to be faster!

Is your PC too old to upgrade to a newer version of window's such as 8 or 10? Check your start-up for programs that don't need to open on start-up  Too many of these slows everything down. Uninstall programs you don't use, taking care not to uninstall operating system programs.  Clear your cache and your Internet history. Use a quality virus protection program, like Norton and run a scan. Some viruses slow your computer down. https://us.norton.com/360  There is also a program called System Mechanic that offers you the choice to fix things which are slowing it down. https://www.techspot.com/downloads/5283-system-mechanic-free.html

If your computer is old, you may want to replace it with a new one. The PC I'm using right now cannot be upgraded to Windows 10 because the graphics card does not work with it. This system is around 10 years old which is ancient for a PC.
