Historians have ranked Barack Obama the 12th best president of all time, the highest rated since President Ronald Reagan, in a new C-SPAN survey released Friday.

Less than a month after exiting the White House, Obama received high marks from presidential historians for his pursuit of "equal justice for all" and for his commanding "moral authority," ranking third and seventh among all former presidents in each respective category. The 44th president also cracked a top 10 ranking for his "economic management" and public persuasion.

The former president's tenure earned its lowest marks for the relationship between the presidency and Congress, with bitter partisanship often stagnating the effectiveness between the two and Obama seeing his Democratic majority slip in both the House of Representatives and the Senate during his eight years in office.

Historians, however, remained mixed on whether Obama's standing so soon after leaving office was higher or lower than expected.

"Although 12th is a respectable overall ranking, one would have thought that former President Obama’s favorable rating when he left office would have translated into a higher ranking in this presidential survey," said Edna Greene Medford, a Howard University professor and member of C-SPAN's historical advisory board.

Others, though, felt the former president's performance fresh out of office was remarkable.

"That Obama came in at number 12 his first time out is quite impressive," Douglas Brinkley, a Rice University professor and C-SPAN adviser, said in a press release.

He's got some likeable qualities for sure albeit he is deficient with the most important skill in doing that job well.  Negotiating.

Can you specify on his big wins as a negotiator?

I will start with where he blew it, he couldn't negotiate with Iran (Tehran) on building nukes.

Notice in these so called ranking lists that there is an absence  of any accomplishments regarding his 8 years in office. I can think of a few...........he created greater racial divide. He weekend our military at the same time empowering enemies abroad. He raised the debt higher than all former presidents combined. He raised taxes across the board for all people ensuring our economic slavery. He weaken our dollar. He openly criticized businesses stating they did not create their industry. He closed the White House to the general public solidifying his dislike for the American people.

Yeah, Obama was a great leader alright.

It’s difficult to comprehend how any reasonable and knowing individual could think Obomba was a good president.

Trump inherited a nation left frayed, broke and dramatically weakened by Barack’s administration.

Probably true that they are mostly liberals, although Washington, Eisenhower, and Reagan (all three more conservative than liberal) are ranked higher than Obama in this survey. What a lot of people on this Board tend to forget is that Obama left office with 55 percent approval or thereabouts, compared to Trump’s current 40 percent approval. 55 percent includes way more than just “liberals” (maybe around 30 to 35 percent).

These things move all the time. For instance, Clinton was ranked 13th one year, 19th the next, now he's 15th. He'll probably stay in the 15 - 20 range. Reagan was in the mid 20's through the 90's, now many put him in the high singles to low teens.

The only guys that are cemented in the top 10 most years are Lincoln, Washington, FDR, Thomas Jefferson,Teddy Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Eisenhower, Andrew Jackson and Wilson.

Obama is riding high now because of the anti-Trump sentiment, I think in a few years, we'll see him in the high teen's, low 20's.
