Ultimate Warrior, Jim Hellwig...1990 NPC NEWS INTERVIEW
« on: March 28, 2018, 06:18:30 AM »
Just found this again online...after not being able to locate my original copy from the early 90's. Incredible interview from NPC NEWS magazine by Jim Manions son. Warrior does some very honest talking about his diet (tons of tuna and aminos) ....as well as daily full body high rep workouts. As well as his history of transitioning from competivive bodybuilding to wrestling. Best interview of the man.Very honest stuff I gather. The meat of the interview starts about 1/3rd down the page. Enjoy.

Warrior’s obsessiveness with his physique both made him successful and killed him.

Especially considering his dad died young of the same thing. Nothing more genetic than heart disease.

His dad can never say he beat Hulk Hogan for the world title though.

Or that he legally changed his last name to Warrior.

Or that he stuck around and raised his son.

Love how he states he doesn’t train heavy and then a bit later in the interview says he’d behind-the-neck press 315 for 10.

Yeah, not heavy.  ::)

I always preferred him earlier in his wrestling days (and when he first entered the WWF) when he was fuller and heavier.

He looked SO powerful and intimidating.

I have a match from that time period in which he just about breaks his opponent in two with a clothesline. The man wasn’t known to be too gentle. In part, likely due to his relative inexperience. His being so explosive and intense played a part, too, I’m sure.

LOL I was confused by that as well.

Do steroids come up in the conversation? It's fairly obvious that he juiced. A genetic disposition to heart disease and steroid abuse is a bad mix.

I think he called himself then the Dingo Warrior.

And wasn’t there gossip that he really died from AIDS?

Btw, I could not open those links (I’m on an iPhone).

The author of that article clearly didn't know his wrestling history.  Warrior was not the first BBer to turn pro 'rassler.

That would be Atlas or Superstar I believe.  May have been others that competed and won but that is just off the top of my head.

Interesting read, good article.

For his training he said he used lighter weights and did about 20 reps and would focus on mainly one muscle group and then pump-set the rest of his body, not counting sets and reps but training instinctively.
And he would do about 10-15 minutes for abs each session and do lots of sets for his calves.

No, heart disease. The night before he died he was on WWE TV, giving a HoF speech. He was beet red, sweating, barely could breathe.
I saw that and felt something was wrong, next AM he died...

true story which has been reported by several wrestlers,  rick rude went up to the warrior after a smatch and told him he was  working to stiff, and the warrior mouthed off back to him stating im the ultimate warrior i can do what i want, rick rude then basically whipped his ass.  from what ive read rick rude was one of the legitly tough in real life.

Exaggeration. As usual.

Rude was legit tough, though, yeah. Not one with which to trifle.

Ivan Putski

I thought of him, but was unsure if he actually had competed before.  I was trying to name ones that competed in BBing and won a show.
