WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump signed a memorandum on Friday ordering the end of a policy, known as “catch and release,” in which illegal immigrants are released from detention while awaiting a court hearing on their status.

As part of the memo, Trump asked Defense Secretary Jim Mattis to produce a list of military facilities that could be used to detain illegal immigrants.

I'm open to the idea. I am wondering what the unintended consequences might be. We'll find out soon enough

Sounds like a good idea
It should prevent the illegals from disappearing into the communities
When found.

I'd be curious to know the percentage of immigrants that disappear during that release time, and what the cost of housing and feeding them is. For example, if the disappearance rate is negligible, does it make sense to then spend tax payer money housing and feeding them along with whatever medical care they require until their hearing? I don't know, I'm just pointing out there may be a downside

if it saves lives and prevents further crimes and victims, then the $$ is not an issue.

Money should always be an issue when it comes to government. Not to say something shouldn't be done because of it, but it should be considered. Locking someone up for a gram of pot for 10 years isn't very cost effective...

Trump's lost me.  It's impossible not to notice he's playing games, doing just enough to try to appear "tough"' on the issue: which, unfortunately for us, means throwing tons more money on things we know aren't successful.  All the while pretending not to notice the actual money trail itself.  Of all people, he's not one who could fake ignorance when it comes to that.

He's gone through the entire checklist of WRONG on this one - not only for the issue itself, but also regarding him, his claims, and his job as our president.

So you compare someone being murdered to save $, to someone going to jail to save $ ?? - no that is apples and oranges.

Yes that would be a interesting fact to some degree
I say some degree because if they are illegal immigrants send them back asap
No need to house & feed + medical expenses
Your here illegally then back you go - cost of train fares for illegal & a couple of guards
To take them back.
No need to over complicate the issue.

Yes, if that is what we did then it would render my question irrelevant
