I agree, it was a much funner time to be into bodybuilding.  Social media has destroyed the world.  It's taken the fun out of a lot of things and created a world of zombies.  My favorite thing about the 90's was just hanging out in the gym for like 4 hours with my buddies.  I worked out at balleys.  We knew all the local competitors and all the trainers.  I never competed, but wish I had at least once.  It's probably still a cool community, but people seem so much more isolated now.

I think we all had that dream that maybe...just maybe ...if we kept working and tried just a little harder that we could get big and ripped enough to be able to step on stage...how delusional we were :-\ :-\

So much truth in this post.

Bodybuilding started going downhill with Ronnie. Dorian too. They are when it became all about size.

Good point

It was judging more than anything, they were pushing for more freak size and the bbers were just following the criteria

Ronnie wasn’t  “huge” by all means in 98 when he won, he was in line with Kevin, flex, and Nasser

It wasn't all about size Dorian was 242 first Olympia and 257 for his 5th , the only time he was really heavy was 266lbs in 1997. Lee Haney was 257lbs in 1989 , Haney was always the heaviest guy on-stage bar far , everyone was chasing Haney in terms of size , Dorian was the first guy who could match him size wise , even though he was lighter.

Incorrect. The 1990 Mr Olympia in Chicago had a first place prize of $100,00.

I beg to differ. That would mean the prize money got REDUCED the following year. Lee Haney got $80,000 for winning the 1991 Olympia. Dorian Yates got $100,000 for winning the 1992 Olympia; as did Gary Strydom for winning the WBF title that same year.

They listed the prize money on ESPN during its chopped up footage of the 1991 O. And, I remember reading the contest results in Muscle and Fitness in early 1992.

The amount of bread I wasted on fucking supplements. What a joke.

But mostly in the eighties.

I remember meeting my still-a-friend friend in grade 10 and visiting his house for the first time.

On the kitchen counter he had a goofy little plastic can of Weider’s Muscle Builder protein. I was freaking out.

“Holy shit! I gotta get some of that! Where’d you get it, man?!”

I genuinely thought I’d become huge if I consumed one or two of them.

Does that bring back memories? My best friend's stepfather had a can of Joe Weider's Dynamic Weight Gainer. He'd only used a little of it and didn't like it. He was about to throw it away. But, my friend asked him if he could give it to me.

I used it for a while. It had a weird vanilla taste to it. That was the first supplement I ever used. I believe that was back in 1988 or early 1989.

Promos for the World Bodybuilding Federation in 1991. I thought these were awesome. FINALLY, I could see bodybuilding more often than ESPN's twilight coverage.

Here's the hype for the first championship at the Trump Taj Mahal. Who knew the man who hosted the WBF championship would be president 25 years later.

These promos aired every week on WWF Superstars and Wrestling Challenge for about two months, until June 15th.

Here are the results. I was psyched because I only had to wait a WEEK, not 4 months, to get the results.

Gary Strydom goes on Prime Time Wrestling, after his victory.

And (for a few months at least), WBF Bodystars. FINALLY!! Bodybuilding was on TV every week on USA network. WBF BodyStars America was the broadcast aired in the UK; a local UHF channel aired the show in the afternoon. So, I could watch it even when I didn't have cable.

agreed the 80's and late 70's were the dream era. the 90's were ultra competetive but its where bb started to lose its appeal. all the guys from the 90's are either dead or lls now. in the early 80s the dream was alive and well. some contests would have 30 competitors and most of them looked good. lean, proportioned, muscular. nobody wore a fucking thong. they were tan and not orange. the posing was good, artistic. the sport still had a healthy image.

Insulin was just starting to be used....then all the bodybuilders started to abuse it and that's when the pregnant bellies started.

Dan Duchaine's articles were great...I always felt like he was revealing secrets of bodybuilding.....I think he was the guy who invented the original supplement called something Orange...can't remember the name....but I heard it was amazing and you would burn fat like hell...but then it was banned and someone put out a weak substitute
