You are probably correct. It did seem like a number of questions were asked, and Joe didn’t really ever seem to have the right answer.

Sometimes, giving the wrong answer and being corrected, is how we learn. John gave reasons and examples, and not only Joe, but the viewer learned something. What is telling, is that he went into the "why" certain things occur, and not just giving the correct answer to stroke his ego, like say Steven Sea-Gull would in explaining Aikido and its movements.

No one takes sweaty man on man action more seriously than Danaher it seems.

I meant it explains his “guess what I’m thinking” smugness.  It was a bit nauseating

7:14 he tells Joe 'correct' and arrogantly takes a sip of water.

He's the only reason I go to Renzo Gracie's academy.

Truth be told, Renzo is there maybe 2-3 times per week and teaches only a few classes. He has the rest of his lieutenants teaching classes, which is fine, but not the same as if he were teaching it.

Danaher on the other hand is incredibly talented and teaches every week without fail. The man should start his own school. By now, he has established the right kind of reputation to do so.

Wouldn't this school be seen as a "rival" school? And wouldn't this take pupil-fighters away from Renzo's school?

Renzo probably made him sign a no-compete clause. If John left, he would not be allowed to open a gym with say, 75 miles of Renzo’s gym.

But John is *LOYAL* anyway

Of course. John leaves and there would be a mass exodus of students leaving with him. I'd guess that easily about 80% of the students would follow him (all of the professional MMA fighters and competitive JiuJitsu players would certainly leave).

I don't know if Renzo ever made him sign a none-compete, plus in New York, those are highly frowned upon by most judges. Not to mention that there are probably about 7-8 bordering Jiujitsu academies in the area, so it's not like John would be doing something unheard of by opening yet another academy.

That said, Royalty is correct. Danaher above all else is loyal. For him to leave, Renzo would have to do something terrible, like steal his rashguard or possibly shoot him with a gun.

"Danaher got a V.H.S. tape of Royce Gracie, Hélio’s son, at U.F.C. 2, winning four fights in less than ten minutes. Soon after, a Columbia classmate little more than half Danaher’s size, who had been training in the Gracies’ 'crazy Brazilian wrestling' for only two weeks, challenged Danaher to a bout in the philosophy department. Danaher locked the door, grabbed him in a headlock, and threw him to the ground, a tactic he’d had success with in bar fights. But the grad student wrapped his legs around Danaher and started rotating onto his back for a choke. Danaher’s arms got tired; he released the headlock and scrambled away. 'I was absolutely stunned that, despite a considerable size difference, I could do nothing to him on the floor,' Danaher said."

At Columbia, this skillful maneuver is known as the Half-Nelson Goodman Gatame, which considers counterfactual moves in the performance of reversals.
It's as effective as it is potentially "grue"some.
