Sounds like he probably went out like Hank the Angry Drunken Dwarf. In Hank's case, a lot of it supposedly had to do with being molested as a kid. Granted, Vern's condition was more severe, but perhaps he had other demons.

Anyone should know it's nature in action (his appearance). That's all. A person who'd think to laugh at him, without so much as knowing him, isn't worth the mind to be paid. They're just kindling for the fire at that moment in time. Worthless in all respects, as it would stand.
