anecdote from Lance Dreher about Belknap

the entire interview is pretty interesting.
http://bodybuilding-mauritius.blogspot.com/2015/04/a-conversation-with-world-bodybuilding.html

This is interesting.  Tim was certainly hyped in the Weider mags way before the 1981 Mr. America.  Also interesting is the different versions of the story Dreher told.  In his version, when Belknap told him he was going to win the 1981 Mr. America, Dreher said "Whomever is best will win."  In Belknap's version of the story, Dreher said "Rotsa ruck."  ;D

While I love Lance Dreher and his physique. As well as his gracious attitude toward his fans when approached for photos and autographs back in the day.....Lance is a very very very big fabricator or truth. And somewhat very sour and beefs himself up to a larger status than he was. I call total bullshit on Lances Belknap insulin statement.

Was “extra” insulin even available at that point in time? Dreher’s contention implies he went way beyond what was prescribed for his diabetes.

Wish there were a gasp or two when the Pittsburgh bloat ball guest posers walk out on stage.

One has to wonder what the 1984 Olympia stage and placing would have been had a 1984 Tim Belknap and a 1984 Jeff King had been allowed to compete in the IFBB.

When I was 17 years old, I drove out to Rockford, Illinois to see the AAU Mr. Illinois contest. My brother and I walked into the prejudging and Belknap was standing in the middle of the stage, he was the only competitor in the short class. The audience was dead silent, everyone was in shock. Belknap weighed about 215 pounds at 5'4", ripped and vascular everywhere. He was a total freak. Back in 1980, very few bodybuilders had that much thickness and mass while being ripped and vascular. His legs were Tom Platz-like and he had 20 inch arms and super thick all over. He easily won the overall that night. Three months later, he won a very tough AAU Mr. Midwest Open, also held in Rockford. By that time, everyone had heard about this new freak in bodybuilding and the show was sold out. When Belknap came out at night to pose, the audience went nuts. Back then, they had an actual posing platform and Belknap jumped onto the platform and landed in the middle facing the crowd and the place went crazy. He looked unbelievable with his wild curly hair and his massive and ripped physique. Sergio Oliva was there and was watching from the front row and he was blown away. He told someone that Belknap was better than most of the professionals the way he looked that night. I remember his arms were so big that he had to throw his arm back to do a side triceps pose. His legs were freaky, super big with cross striations and vascularity all over. The day after that show, the promoter took some pictures of Belknap in a gym and sent them to Weider. Weider flew Belknap out to California as soon as he saw the pics. He won the America later that year but he lost about 25 pounds to compete in the light heavyweight class.

Belknap figured out how to use insulin to get huge. That he did but his physique, though massive and impressive, didn't improve. Plus his face got fuller which spoiled the added size.

Tim is/was also a Type 1 diabetic, so he was probably able to use insulin to his advantage.

But didn’t realize it. Used it like it should diabetics should use it. Seriously don’t think it would help for bodybuilding

Freak. Apparently, growing up, Kai was a fan:

Random Trivia
- His early inspirations for building his legs came from photos of early ‘80s stars Tom Platz and Tim Belknap.

not to get off topic - when did insulin get figured out to be used by bbers?

gh15 gives credit to Milos Sarcev for using insulin to promote muscle hypertrophy. I know many here
hate gh15 and Milos and will disagree and say it was used way before Milos for bbing. Well, if they did they kept it to themselves so it can't be proven. Milos was speaking about it in the 1980s.

https://www.cleanhealth.com.au/interview-former-ifbb-pro-milos-sarcev/

So back then in 1981 when I started bodybuilding I accepted from my father what sounded logical to me even then. I call it the ‘Hyperemia Advantage’, which is used to create a maximal anabolic environment that will enable you to achieve maximal hypertrophy.

So here is rationale behind it. Men have about 5L of blood and women have about 4L distributed all over the body which is constantly circulating around. In a state of rest at maximum about 10 -12 % of that blood finds its way in to our skeletal muscles, as there is no real physiological demand at the time of a low physical activity period. However, when we become active, blood is sent to our working muscles… and that increased blood flow to exercising muscles (Hyperemia) can achieve an astonishing 60% increase in blood flow or more during weight training. This happens ONLY during the workout!

So as my father suggested, if I supply all the necessary anabolic nutrients in a pre-digested form (e.g; ATP, glucose, amino acids etc) into the blood stream right before training and then continue delivering more of the same nutrients during my training session whilst raising the most anabolic hormone in our body – insulin – I will create an immediate and maximal anabolic environment.

So instead of losing nutrients (protein degradation or catabolism) we are creating a greater nutritional uptake by our muscle cells (protein synthesis or anabolism) and simultaneously preventing anti-catabolism… everything we need to great the maximal results we are after. So we need to remember that we only have this opportunity during training, not before or after as blood will not be in the muscle to this extent.

He was huge. But his chest size and shape (genetics) was poor. Pecs make a huge difference in how your look is perceived.

Find it hard to call this shot of Belknap poor genetics; those pecs look thick and veiny to me. This guy influenced me big time into becoming a bodybuilder.

I remember the first article about him in m+f magazine in 1981 written by Mike Mentzer. I think this picture was used in the article and he was the freakiest looking bodybuilder I had ever seen.

There's nothing bloofy about Belknapp besides his face
