Of the creative arts, acting is bottom of the barrel.

Some are better than others, sure, but let’s be real. A majority can act competently. Witness the SCORES of actors who just leap into TV and motion pictures from ... music, grocery clerk, modelling, etc.

Some kid without one class acts alongside a “genius thespian” like DeNiro and holds his or her own just fine.

The minority is those who cannot reasonably act, given a few pointers (a matter of minutes).

Acting as some challenging “craft” or “art” is yet another Hollyweird/Joo myth. For a century they’ve presented/cultivated thespian arts as this unbelievable talent. Oscars, etc.

It’s a hype.

I took drama classes all through high school. Not one student, myself included, couldn’t achieve, to lesser and greater degrees, reasonable performance.

P.S. When someone says, He/She is a great actor/actress, what he/she almost always means is, I love the person playing the part (looks, mannerisms, offscreen persona, etc.), or, I love the movie/dialogue/character.

P.P.S. I love movies. An avid watcher. And I, too, have my favourite actors.

Good role models in a tongue in cheek way and they all have at least some very interesting movies in their resume.

It's kind of ridiculous that we look to actors as role models--"we", as in, our society.  Actors are nothing but dancing monkeys, paid to amuse and entertain us.

Yes, and athletes, and singers, and politicians, and YouTube celebs... Most are overpaid, crybaby attention whores.

Big name actors make a lot of money for their employers. They are generally paid what they are worth. Some, like James Franco, produce, direct and act in indie films and rely on the film's profits for payment.

In order to be a celebrity, particularly when you have no talent, you have to be an attention whore in order to be successful. The media provides the platform and the public eats it up.

I'm one of those individuals who has a tough time knowing if a TV actor or motion picture actor is either good or bad.

I believe that most any actor has to be pretty damn good to get a principal TV or motion picture role and I'm sure as hell not capable of telling if he or she is doing a good or bad job.

BUT ... I did see THE DISASTER ARTIST and James Franco did a damn good job playing the part of a damn bad actor, so I guess I know a little bit about who is good and who is bad  .... thanks to that motion picture.

I have a number (3) of big time actors in the family whose personalities I know very well and I continue to be totally amazed when the are practicing for a motion picture role  impersonating a character who is totally different than themselves.

They 'assume identities' completely different than their own.

Whenever anyone in the family has an upcoming role in one of LaLa Land's motion pictures, they practice around the house in an effort to assume the persona of the character that they will be playing on the screen ... and after three or four days of 'being someone else' the 4 year olds get upset and say, "We want our daddy back!"

I, myself, auditioned a few times ,,, but I  would always   end up laughing (at myself) because it was impossible for me to be anyone other than me.

And .... In my humble opinion many actors get famous mainly because the film/films in which they appeared ..... carried them.

Whom do you GetBiggers think are the bad actors who get continuous motion picture roles in Hollywood? I can't think of one.

It is an industry in secular decline.

It won’t be missed.

The conversation is or should include why theater attendance is down.

PRIME, I think that aticle addresses the question of lower movie-theater attendance pretty well....

'Last year’s slump in domestic ticket sales can partly be attributed to a very poor turnout during the summer blockbuster season. Theater attendance in the US and Canada during the summer months, which saw releases like Baywatch, The Mummy, and the fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, hit a 25-year low, according to the LA Times. The number of tickets sold from May through Labor Day was reportedly down 16 percent from 2016.

As Bloomberg points out, there are other factors in play, too. As streaming services like Netflix, Amazon, and HBO Go offer more entertainment options, theatergoers may be less likely to leave their homes to watch a movie. Ticket prices also continue to rise, even as startups like the subscription service MoviePass threaten to devalue the movie-going experience.'

But I do think that there has been an increase with regards to movie and TV production.

We took a family of four adults and thee kids to see THE GREATEST SHOWMAN and anf those theater tickets alone came to over $100.

Of course we went to one of those theaters in L.A, where meals are served directly to your seat and that was another $100 plus a BIG PLUS!

It's cheaper to stay home and cook your own popcorn where you can now project a great movie 10 ft. wide and a Bose sound system.

I think that movie theaters as we know them now will be non-existant in  5 - 6 years ...... along with all these shopping malls that have empty spaces today.

But there will always be a big demand for home-type enterainment.

There's a say that goes something like, 'those that can do, those that can't become critics'. Note: That's not exactly how it goes but the comparison works.
