President Trump said he likely will support a congressional effort to end the federal ban on marijuana, a major step that would reshape the pot industry and end the threat of a Justice Department crackdown.

Trump’s remarks put him sharply at odds with Atty. Gen. Jeff Sessions on the issue. The bill in question, pushed by a bipartisan coalition, would allow states to go forward with legalization unencumbered by threats of federal prosecution.

Trump made his comments to a gaggle of reporters Friday morning just before he boarded a helicopter on his way to the G-7 summit in Canada. His remarks came the day after the bipartisan group of lawmakers proposed their measure.

One of the lead sponsors is Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), who is aligned with Trump on several issues but recently has tangled with the administration over the Justice Department’s threatened crackdowns on marijuana.

“I support Sen. Gardner,” Trump said when asked about the bill. “I know exactly what he’s doing. We’re looking at it. But I probably will end up supporting that, yes.”

Good idea.  Hope pot is decriminalized.

I won't use it but it's idiotic to waste resources trying to stop pot use.

Trump is on such a roll lately.   Greater than Reagan at this pace.

Waste of resources and jail space locking up stoners. Do it Don, I will forever be in your debt!

Good.  I do not partake of the wacky terbacky but there is absolutely no reason it should not be decriminalized.

Not a fan of smoking anything (well I used to) but the edibles are off the charts. (The grape lozenges) talk about every pain in your body gone for the night, and amazing sleep.
Big fan...

My local cops arrest 5-10 people a week for having a joint or two.

Waste of time.

Marijuana is very harmful.

But alcohol is a devastating drug and it's legal.

So either ban both of them or decriminalize both.

I would chose a ban on alcohol if it were my decision.

Alcohol is definitely worse but Prohibition doesn't work.

Just creates a massive criminal industry.

How about let adults decide what they want to put into their bodies?

I say everything should be legal but government should give warnings on side effects.

Frankly, I'm surprised Trump would take this stance. I agree with it even though I don't partake. Tried it....didn't like it. On another note, we won't get arrested for my grandson's single plant grow operation in the backyard.  ;D

Surely the Republican base would not be happy with this?

On that ground alone, can't see Trump actually going through with this.

Why?

Because he wants to legalize a plant?

Cocain comes from a plant, let’s decriminalize that too🙄 But by all means keep steroids as a schedule III drug that’s A LOT less harmless than either weed or alcohol. Fucking brilliant

I tend to agree. Personal responsibility. You want to pay a stranger for sex? have at it. You want to smoke meth? go for it.. but the minute you cross over into property crime or violent crime because of it.. gloves come off.

The government dictating what I can and can't do when it comes to me is irritating. While I wouldn't be smoking dope or snorting coke, I realize 1. we are spending billions on a war we have been losing and will continue to lose. 2. It's none of the governments business. If they are so concerned about health they would make tobacco and alcohol illegal.
