I know what you mean, I went into the military, my friends went into different fields, mechanic, construction, IT, etc and over the years they built up an impressive list of things they could build and fix. I envy their skills. Luckily youtube came along and I was able to learn how to do basic repairs on the car and home by watching videos. When you stop learning, you might as well die. I'm learning new things all the time.

Pellius made a positive post, and there is no need to pull the thread into this direction...

This is a good lesson for why people need to work hard when they’re young, invest their earnings and plan for the future.

???? What does continuing to work have to do with that?

I tend to be a home body and when I retired I found that I just started sleeping late and hanging around the house just reading and message boarding. I think it's important to get out of the house and keep busy. Go out and meet people. Learn something new. Working in a store in my neighborhood I have gotten to meet, talk and learn about people that I've lived with for years but never really gotten to know. I'm surprise at how much people have gone through in their lives. Looking at them you would never know. I just met a couple last week who moved to Hawaii after their son got murdered in a terrorist attack in France. I remember that incident. He was just an ordinary college student in the wrong place at the wrong time.

In such a short time I've made what I consider life long friends. People who have enriched my life. I've been to barbecues at people's homes that I never would have known and who have lived such rich, interesting lives. Also, it's kind of nice that when I'm out and about, like say, I go to the grocery store or The Windward Mall I always run into somebody I know and we have a good chat or go to lunch.

And if you need help installing a new toilet -- I'm there.

You were always jealous of my luxurious full head of hair still going strong as I near sixty. Let it go, CalvinH!
Let it go! You have your gifts as well. I couldn't hold a candle to your ability to consume and tolerate alcoholic beverages.

There's on thing that people like you that make comments like that always have: they have never, nor will they ever, post a pic of themselves. They would be laughed off the board.

But please carry on with your role as the most disliked member on this board.

I agree, being retired is overrated,  stay busy and stay active.  But being in Hawaii you should've considered being a scuba instructor.

My pops retired with an awesome pension, gets social security and has good investments and he works a part time job. It's good for him. Gets him out of the house, he made new friends that he goes out to breakfast with a few times per week, etc. He didn't need to work after retirement. He wanted to work.

Good for your dad. Perhaps I should give part time work some serious consideration. I do quite a bit of volunteer work which helps to keep me busy.

It's always been a source of shame and embarrassment that I was so "unhandy" in the sense that
I couldn't do crap as far as home and car repairs. Never pounded a nail or could barely use a screw driver, never changed a tire. I felt that as a man you should be somewhat competent in that area and are able to do some basic repairs and put things together for yourself. My dad was a total book worm and nerd and I never learned anything from him in that respect. My uncle, my aunt's husband, could fix and build anything. I always looked up to him. Back in the 1960s he would work at Pan Am airlines at night and built his home from the ground up by himself during the day. The amazing thing was that he wasn't a trained carpenter. He learned on the job! Learned to build a house while he was building his house. When he would get stuck he would just ask advice from the construction workers in the area since there was tons of housing being built at that time in Waipahu, HI. I've been reading the Goodrum thread about his new dwelling with great interest but so much goes over my head. I'm so impressed that guys like Melvin and so many others that post in that thread know so much about construction. Also like Marty Champions post about construction. To me he's the hard core real deal when it comes to real man's work. He may be a drunken fatso but I feel like such a beta pussy compared to him.

Anyway, I got a job at a local hardware store and in the last six months I've learned to cut keys, mix paint, use the panel and chop saw, pump propane, drive a fork lift, use the pipe cutter, hand drill, cut glass.... I've even put some furniture together that we put on display. It's hard ass work for me at 58 years old and I get absolutely exhausted at the end of the day. I'm still a moron and when customers ask me questions because most of the times I'm clueless but I am learning a lot. It's amazing when you try something completely different from what you are use to how much you learn in such a short period of time even if you're old and set in your ways.

I've replaced my air conditioner and because the hole was already there and it was just a matter of putting it in and securing it that's nothing for most of you here but for me that's quite an accomplishment. Hopefully I'll gain enough confidence to do some painting on my house and maybe redo my kitchen. I'm pretty sure I can put in a new toilet myself if I had to. Something I wouldn't even consider in the past.

I thought I'd throw in some pics, though non-bbing pics, as it's been some years since I've posted any recent pics. I'm still consistent with training but have cut back to twice a week as my priorities and interest, as well as energy levels have shifted.

Looking good Pellius ,great calves

I know a retired millionaire who is a Walmart greeter, no joke drives a Bentley too parks it all the way at the end of the Walmart parking lot, says he loves it! See's all kinds of interesting people, gets away from his wife, and keeps him busy, the guy is always happy, and does a great job. I got to know him from going to Walmart and every time he would say "you looking big man" or "hey big guy" finally one day he asked me about my diet and looked at the food I bought, we got to talking he was saying his son's like working out too, but they never have enough time to train properly, I asked what did they do, he said both of them are doctors, I said what the hell are you doing you here?? They should be taking care of you, he told me he used to own a restaurant and also owns a lot of real estate, he said I just do this part time to get out of my house, see and talk with people. I said you know what you're right man, he then said check this out, he shows me his key chain, it's a Bentley key, I said "you drive a Bentley?" he's just smiles and says look at the end of the parking lot and you'll see my car, it was a black Bentley coupe. Dude is awesome, so props to you Pellius, live your life man!
