It's always been a source of shame and embarrassment that I was so "unhandy" in the sense that
I couldn't do crap as far as home and car repairs. Never pounded a nail or could barely use a screw driver, never changed a tire. I felt that as a man you should be somewhat competent in that area and are able to do some basic repairs and put things together for yourself. My dad was a total book worm and nerd and I never learned anything from him in that respect. My uncle, my aunt's husband, could fix and build anything. I always looked up to him. Back in the 1960s he would work at Pan Am airlines at night and built his home from the ground up by himself during the day. The amazing thing was that he wasn't a trained carpenter. He learned on the job! Learned to build a house while he was building his house. When he would get stuck he would just ask advice from the construction workers in the area since there was tons of housing being built at that time in Waipahu, HI. I've been reading the Goodrum thread about his new dwelling with great interest but so much goes over my head. I'm so impressed that guys like Melvin and so many others that post in that thread know so much about construction. Also like Marty Champions post about construction. To me he's the hard core real deal when it comes to real man's work. He may be a drunken fatso but I feel like such a beta pussy compared to him.

Anyway, I got a job at a local hardware store and in the last six months I've learned to cut keys, mix paint, use the panel and chop saw, pump propane, drive a fork lift, use the pipe cutter, hand drill, cut glass.... I've even put some furniture together that we put on display. It's hard ass work for me at 58 years old and I get absolutely exhausted at the end of the day. I'm still a moron and when customers ask me questions because most of the times I'm clueless but I am learning a lot. It's amazing when you try something completely different from what you are use to how much you learn in such a short period of time even if you're old and set in your ways.

I've replaced my air conditioner and because the hole was already there and it was just a matter of putting it in and securing it that's nothing for most of you here but for me that's quite an accomplishment. Hopefully I'll gain enough confidence to do some painting on my house and maybe redo my kitchen. I'm pretty sure I can put in a new toilet myself if I had to. Something I wouldn't even consider in the past.

I thought I'd throw in some pics, though non-bbing pics, as it's been some years since I've posted any recent pics. I'm still consistent with training but have cut back to twice a week as my priorities and interest, as well as energy levels have shifted.

not retired myself, only 48 but also learning some new shit in physical type labour

About being multi-skilled re various jobs. When I taught high school I noticed that the future tradesmen came from the classes which were average. If these people could weld, fabricate, etc., it couldn't be that difficult. Owning a gym often requires various tasks and it wasn't long before I learned how to weld and use simple machine tools to make gym equipment. I graduated to having an engineering factory complete with big lathes, milling machines, auto bandsaw, 3 Morse Taper Radial Drills and everything else needed to fabricate gym equipment. I got manuals and learned that way. Nowadays it is easier and better to watch and learn from YouTube videos.

Over the years we have moved gyms. So I had to draft plans for council approval. Then there was some building to do such as partitions. Some simple plumbing, tiling, electrical work, and installing and shifting things like mirrors and equipment. You soon become a jack of all trades if you own a gym for decades.

Computers were easy to use and I even built my own super computer a few years ago. Well, super for me. 48 Gb of Ram for example.

???? What does continuing to work have to do with that?

I tend to be a home body and when I retired I found that I just started sleeping late and hanging around the house just reading and message boarding. I think it's important to get out of the house and keep busy. Go out and meet people. Learn something new. Working in a store in my neighborhood I have gotten to meet, talk and learn about people that I've lived with for years but never really gotten to know. I'm surprise at how much people have gone through in their lives. Looking at them you would never know. I just met a couple last week who moved to Hawaii after their son got murdered in a terrorist attack in France. I remember that incident. He was just an ordinary college student in the wrong place at the wrong time.

In such a short time I've made what I consider life long friends. People who have enriched my life. I've been to barbecues at people's homes that I never would have known and who have lived such rich, interesting lives. Also, it's kind of nice that when I'm out and about, like say, I go to the grocery store or The Windward Mall I always run into somebody I know and we have a good chat or go to lunch.

And if you need help installing a new toilet -- I'm there.

I'm 4 or 5 years away from retirement and applaud your approach. Experiencing new things and meeting interesting people is what life is all about.

Good for your dad. Perhaps I should give part time work some serious consideration. I do quite a bit of volunteer work which helps to keep me busy.

I never knew anything about hardware and lumber until I spent 5 years working at Lowes.   Its very fulfilling to know what goes into a home and how to improve it.   I mostly learned about home decor and interior design.  But I would have taken up a home based business on your own if you were getting bored but as long as you enjoy it, its what's important

My business ventures are still doing pretty good but having multiple sources of incomes allows me to live more comfortably.

Same here. Guaranteed annuities are great. My other investments make me nervous because returns are not fixed.

stocks? Then own less.. life is too short to have too many risky investments.
