Yeah, that’s pretty much it. It’s first and foremost a job.  Do the time, get the pension, get a Lakehouse, go fishing and drink lots of beer.

I’ve said many times here, that, contrary those who think cops spent the whole day looking for new and innovative ways to oppress African-Americans, most cops would be very happy to go through their entire careers and not make a single arrest.

For the first 10 years, not a moments thought is given to retirement. year 11- 14 you notice old fogies talking about their back pain and when they are going to retire and what they will do afterwards. That's about all they talk about and you zone them out.Not really thinking much about retirement, it's too far away.  About year 15 you start to listen in on the old fogies talking about retirement, at least it's not as annoying and boring as it once seemed. between 16 and 20 years you start engaging in the conversation, asking questions and mentally comparing your retirement plans to theirs. Year 20 until you retire, that's pretty much all you think and talk about with your peers and you notice younger officers zoning you out. That's pretty much it in a nutshell.

In my years of various forms of law enforcement my only thought has been watching the clock and running away from my on call cell phone

Been retired for 7 years. I was Prison guard in the prison Sly made that movie. I was a city cop and then a State Trooper for 25 years.  Three police academies. Yes, I hate the liberal ideology.

Varies from Department to department. Some have a 80 rule.. age plus time of service equals 80. Some have a set number of years, 20, 25 at any age. Others have a reduced retirement at 55 if you don't have enough to retire outright.
