For the first 10 years, not a moments thought is given to retirement. year 11- 14 you notice old fogies talking about their back pain and when they are going to retire and what they will do afterwards. That's about all they talk about and you zone them out.Not really thinking much about retirement, it's too far away. About year 15 you start to listen in on the old fogies talking about retirement, at least it's not as annoying and boring as it once seemed. between 16 and 20 years you start engaging in the conversation, asking questions and mentally comparing your retirement plans to theirs. Year 20 until you retire, that's pretty much all you think and talk about with your peers and you notice younger officers zoning you out. That's pretty much it in a nutshell.
