(CNN) Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old Latina running her first campaign, ousted 10-term incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley in New York's 14th congressional district on Tuesday, CNN projects, in the most shocking upset of a rollicking political season.

An activist and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, Ocasio-Cortez won over voters in the minority-majority district with a ruthlessly efficient grassroots bid, even as Crowley -- the fourth-ranking Democrat in the House -- outraised her by a 10-to-1 margin.

This was the first time in 14 years a member of his own party has attempted to unseat Crowley, who chairs the Queens County Democrats. His defeat marks a potential sea change in the broader sphere of liberal politics -- a result with implications for Democrats nationwide that would recall, as optimistic progressives routinely noted during the campaign, former GOP Majority Leader Eric Cantor's loss to the insurgent, tea party-backed Dave Brat in June 2014.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said on Wednesday that progressive New York congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's surprise win should not be viewed at something larger within the Democratic Party.

"They made a choice in one district. So let’s not get yourself carried away as an expert on demographics and the rest of that. Within the caucus or outside the caucus, we are...again, we have an array of genders, generations, geography, and there is opinion in our caucus, and we’re proud of that," Pelosi told reporters at a news conference.

"The fact that in a very progressive district in New York, it went more progressive than...well, Joe Crowley is a progressive, but more she’s left than Joe Crowley, is about that district. It is not to be viewed as something that stands for anything else. Are we excited about another generation of people coming into the commons? I am particularly excited that so many women are running across the country, because when I came to Congress usually people had raised their families or done something else before they came. The men were an average ten years younger when they came. And now we have women stepping up earlier, weighing home and work in a way that’s going to benefit all the American people," she said.

The mother of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said that the 28-year-old democratic socialist aspires to eventually sit in the Oval Office.

“Her aspiration is to be the president,” Blanca Ocasio-Cortez told the New York Post in a report published Thursday.

“She has been thinking about politics since she was a teenager. She would read historical and political books old and new,” her mother said. “She would engage in political discussions passionately.”

The 55-year-old mom and school secretary told the local publication she spent several days helping her daughter campaign against 10-term incumbent Rep. Joseph Crowley (D) for New York’s 14th District congressional seat.

It was like “fighting Goliath,” Blanca Ocasio-Cortez said of the race just days after the shocking upset.

“She is fighting for our community. She is fighting for the working class. She is fighting for immigrants,” Blanca Ocasio-Cortez said, adding her daughter knows firsthand what its like to experience financial hardships in her family, which she says helps more voters relate to her.

“We can relate to that,” her mother added. “We are working class. We did struggle. We know what struggle means.”

Ocasio-Cortez shocked the political by unseating Crowley in the Democratic primary.

The former organizer for Sen. Bernie Sanders's (I-Vt.) presidential campaign was given little chance to topple Crowley, who is the chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, but picked up steam after a campaign video went viral last month.

The newly-minted Democratic nominee will face Republican Anthony Pappas in the general election in November.

I've brought this up before. One of my former athletes that I've trained since High School went on to get a degree in Econ from UCLA yet supported Bernie Sanders in the last elections. How can this be when there can't even be a competent argument made in favor of Socialism not even by Sanders himself. I understand that we do have it to some degree but what these people are advocating for is true Socialist/Communist society.

I want to hear from some of the leftists on here about this. Strawman?

I follow The Young Turks, Jimmy Dore and Secular Talk just to get a feel for the progressive movement. If you go back over the past couple months, they were watching this race very closely.

I never thought she had much of a chance against such a powerful force within the party but if you look at how she used the fact that he brought in so much money from corporate donors AGAINST him. She buried that guy with that angle.

I think her platform is abhorrent but I have to give her props on that and I think she opened the door for more types just like her. I think the civil war within the Democrat Party is here.

As much as I disagree with almost all of her policies, she is a breath of fresh air in today's political atmosphere - especially within the Democrat Party. She's at least honest about her socialist agenda.

You can graduate from UCLA as an English major without taking a single class in Shakespeare, Milton, or Chaucer.  But you have to take three classes is SJW stuff:

Following a revolt of the junior faculty, however, during which it was announced that Shakespeare was part of the "Empire," UCLA junked these individual author requirements.
