He was at his very best at around 217 @ 5'11".

His later fights he was anywhere from 235-250 and it didn't suit him, he was a lot slower and didn't punch harder. His top weight was near 300 but that's over, thankfully.

So rare to see these in gyms, which is why you have pencil necked gym rats with monster traps.

Tyson was an actual genetic freak, not like these guys today where apparently literally everyone involved in the fitness industry is a "genetic freak", really all of you? are you sure?  ::)

Theres a picture of tyson as a 12 or 13 year old with his classmates, and hes already so big he literally looks like an adult teacher standing next to his class of youths.

We're also talking about 15 year old that already had a 200lb lean physique after just year of boxing training, and then further built it up to ~215lbs with just calisthenics and some light weighted shrugs and good mornings. Thats what actual freak gene recombo for muscle gain does.

I remember when he first started training with weights seriously, was on his comeback trail after getting out of prison. His skills had mostly diminished by then (getting rid of rooney didn't help things of course) but his physique became phenomenal for that brief window where he was actually interested in fighting sincerely. He was 230lbs and looked like he was carved from stone, still crazy fast. Sadly that brief spark of inspiration he had post prison didnt last and we all know what happened after knocking off a few cans, becoming a cokehead and don king stealing all his money.

Really sad. If D'amato hadn't died, Tyson might very well have been the greatest fighters to have ever done it. Scary to think what the kid who cleaned out the HW division in the late 80s mightve become if we actually saw him in his prime and with his skills fully matured. Steve Lott always said that very few got to see the best version of mike, which was always in the gym where he was much more relaxed.

While he was a freak, my personal belief was he started juicing early.

You can do that with a head harness or even just a plate and towel (no homo)

Unlikely. He displayed above average muscularity at a very young age, see my previous post in this thread. He was already significantly bigger than his peers at age 13 or 14. At 15 after just one year of bog standard boxing training he was between 200 and 210 lbs very lean.

Now post prison tyson might be a different story. We saw him at 230lbs looking carved from stone. The 1990s seems to be when steroid usage in boxing really took off, with obvious abusers such as evander holyfield who was even peripherally tied to the bust of one of those 'anti aging' drug fronts. Roy Jones Jr was also implicated for testosterone abuse in a story that seems to have evaporated from the internet. Given some of the people he was hanging around with after hooking up with Don King, i certainly wouldn't put it past him to have gotten on the sauce, probably thinking he needed every helping hand he could get to regain his title. That said, tyson in his post boxing life has been remarkably candid about all the dirty shit he got up to, including being high on coke and weed before a fight. He never once mentioned steroids. That doesnt mean he didn't do them of course, but I just find it unlikely.

when you look at tyson's bone structure, he's a true heavyweight in spite of his height. Whereas a lot of the 90s juiceheads were cruiserweights blown up artificially with the drugs, such as holyfield who was a skinny cruiserweight before his miraculous physique transformation credited to a suspicious doctor and physical trainer.

The dead giveaway is usually the fist size. Natural heavyweights have very big hands. Theres a great old video where James Toney's former trainer and mentor talks about why James was delusional about moving up to heavyweight, and points out that his fists are indicative of a natural middleweight, which Toney was until he let his eating disorder get out of control and ballooned up in size, and of course would later also become a steroid user pissing hot once or twice for winny. James was a remarkable fighter in spite of his shortcomings, and even did fairly well at heavyweight for a time, but you can only go so far on talent alone and reality is a 5'9 fat guy just isn't going to be competitive with the roided up giants that started dominating the division in the 2000s.

I agree, there's a lot of alternatives to machines.

But in all my years working out at various health clubs as well as hardcore gyms, I've never seen any of those accessories or people training their neck, even if the gym had the machines. Same with forearms. Some people believe the personal trainer dogma that they muscles "train themselves" with other movements. Which is why you see these guys with huge arms with toothpicks below the elbow or tiny necks on huge traps.

A thick neck looks rad.  A sign of a strong athletic physique.  I know you can't train a chin, but a thick strong neck defitely helps absorb punishment in a fight.

Tyson did a lot of neck bridges, rocking back and forth and all angles. I read that he did about 10 minutes a day of bridges. He also did heavy barbell shrugs for reps.
