I was a good golfer years ago (2 handicap). There are things you can do to quickly improve your scores.
#1 is to improve your short game. Chipping, pitching and putting. This is numero uno for score reduction. Golf is a game of minimizing errors. Even pros hit poor shots but they recover with great short games.
Now to improve your long game you need to have solid fundamentals to reduce not only errors but the severity of the errors (mishits).
To do this requires just a few things.
1) Solid grip. What ever grip you choose be consistent with it. Your body will adapt but you need to have a good, basic grip. Google it or take a lesson on grip.
2) Stance. This is all important! You have to aim correctly. I suggest using a square stance for all shots. You line your HEELS up parallel to the target line and the clubface ON the target line. Like railroad tracks. Most people think they are aiming correctly but they are not. The eye tricks you. You must set up the same everytime so your body can learn where to send the ball.
3) The final point is to take your mind out of your swing. Take your grip, set up your stance, visualize the ball trajectory, and then TRUST your body to make the swing. If you hit a bad shot don't panic. You are going to hit bad shots sometimes. Just move on to the next shot and repeat your program...
grip, stance, visualize, trust.
This also applies to chipping and even putting. Grip, stance, visualize, trust. Every time you do this. It doesn't have to take long once you get it down. Practice it. Do it when you practice on the range or putting green. Every time you hit a shot do it.
4) Practice. You have to practice to get better. No way around it. Practice the short game, putting. Hit balls. Not just your driver but work through all the clubs in your bag. If your range bucket has 50 balls, hit 5 with each club starting with the pitching wedge and move down to the long clubs. Don't hit 50 drivers. If you play once a week, practice 2 time a week (or more). Don't forsake your family for golf however. If you can do a hour of practice twice a week you will see a big improvement (if you practice correctly).
5) DO NOT read golf magazines or any of that stuff on the internet about how to play golf! If you do this you will constantly be messing with your swing, etc. and it will screw you up. You will "think too much" and "thinking too much" is what kills you. You can't play well if you are thinking about mechanics. Golf is a natural game once you get your "grip, stance, visualize, trust" going.
Read this book however which will explain how to get your mind out of the way so your body can do its job. Of particular importance is the part about the
"bounce-hit" in golf.
