Staining a fence (Marty)
« on: August 25, 2018, 09:27:53 AM »
Well, I have next week off, thought it was going to take all week to stain my fence. Did most of it today, will do the other side on MON.
(More time for weights and beer all week next week I guess, going to be 95 and humid all week).

Marty, this shite says its good for 5-7 years. (Cabot).

Should I re-stain it like every 3 years to keep it nice? Put up my sign for my killer Pitbull, so Im covered if any douche walks in my yard and gets bit by little Ollie. (Olive).

Looks great. How long after building it did you let it dry before staining? I’ve heard six months on salt treated lumber.

Thx IG... It was put in like 4 months ago. The guy had the fencing on his lot for 2-3 months, so he told me to do it end of AUG, so I think the timing is right.
Looks much better than just plain wood, I dont like it when it goes gray and ages. This was how it looked new.

Honestly Cabot sucks.i completely stopped using it.prob get 2-3 years out of it if on a deck but longer on a fence.Cabot used to be great and now they such but they still cruise on business due to there name.Sherwin Williams recently bought Cabot so one would assume it would get better.Either way it looks good and on a fence will prob last 5 years.

Yes definitely restain every 3 years.

Nice fence, also Best type of fence to stain mate the ones with the gaps between each board are a fucking nightmare and would take at least 3x as long to stain. Would charge a customer more in labour to stain a fence than the labour to erect it, thankfully the timber comes pressure treated so always leave the staining to the customer on fencing jobs

Its good timing, because I have a new douche-bag neighbor that I was forced to snap on, he kept coming over, bugging me.
Dog tries to go at him, and he keeps on trying to talk to me while Im trying to control her. Guy's a real tool.

I finally blew up on him and scared him away, but the fence makes it that much better, keeps him away, keeps the dog from biting his face off.
(Takes a lot for me to snap, came over 7 times between FRI afternoon and SUN morning, finally had it and let him have it, spit was flying out of my mouth and in my beard I was yelling so hard at the douche).

Howdy Doody looking Mutha...

Yup, the smooth side w/out the cross-beams went on like nothing, had my wife do the hard part of painting this side with the cross-beams.
She likes to paint and she's hot in her bikini, so it works for me.

Try a 4" sausage/mini roller if it'll fit in between.  Goes on way faster than brushing and heaps better coverage.  I like a 5l pot with a bucket grid.

nice new dog dave... is that some of the dog's playthings in the yard.. ;)your project reminds me of the time i had to dig a moat in the front of my house due to water coming in the bottom floor... when i was out digging my one neighbor out of my earshot asked my father who was there supervising the technical aspects of the job if i was deformed....... my father told him no, he just likes to lift weights..

Nice job. Takes a lot of motivation to do something like that on your free time.

Good thing about a job like that is that you don’t have to do a ton of prep work like covering up furniture and floors.

Yep, cunt of a job with a brush.  The roller carries enough paint to just mash it right in on anything rough milled so it's nice for cladding as well.

Pro painters get paid enough to piss about all day but those of us who work for a living have to get shit done!  ;D

Fence looks great and Ollie is cute. My daughter has two Staffordshire Terriers and they are the sweetest animals ever. /cue the anti-pit bull crowd now...

Small forest of deciduous trees standing straight as an arrow, and a full lawn. You tell me if it's in a high wind area, lol.

Not sure what a full lawn has to do with wind or the lack thereof. The trees are a good sign that your not very wind resistant fence should remain standing for a long time. How are the posts set? Mine are bolted to H shaped steel anchors set in concrete. They allow the entire post to be above ground level. This not so much for wind resistance as it is to keep the posts from rotting in soggy soil. My fence is around 20 years old and it is still standing solidly.

Unlike you, I didn't stain the fence and now I wish that I had. Instead of the cedar turning a nice silvery gray like I hoped it would, it's just dirty looking with moss on it.

Because the lawn looks like it is Kentucky Bluegrass and that doesn't do well in persistent high wind areas (shallow roots )

it will fade well, these kinda jobs can be done in less than an hour with a roller, sure youl drip about a 4th of the stain in the grass by rolling but your done real fast

Funk, thx...
Shes a cute dog, a hand-full, but she's ours. Dont care if she's Pitbull, or whatever, she's a nice Babe.
9K fence, 2500.00 in training, she costs me big $$$, but again, we take care of dogs and love them.
I know you Funk, I know your great dog White Fang (RIP)  :-[

They are here for a short time, Dogs > People.

I read Cabot sucks also, but it came out OK and if I do it every few years maybe it will last.
I used Sikkens on my last fence, lasted 10+ years but for a 5 gallon bucket, they get 500.00. This bucket costs 170.00.
I hope to sell this place in like 5 years, so no long haul shite for us. Let the next people deal w/ it.

5 years is good Rob, the 2nd coat will be easier than the 1st, and it went on real easy this time. Ill prolly be dead in 5 years anyways.
