BREAKING: California Lawmakers Pass ANOTHER Gun Control Law?!
« on: September 01, 2018, 04:10:14 AM »

https://www.google.com/amp/s/townhall.com/notebook/bethbaumann/2018/08/29/breaking-california-lawmakers-raise-the-age-for-purchasing-long-guns-from-18-to-21-n2514274%3famp=true

The bill passed 26-12 and is currently on Gov. Jerry Brown's (D) desk awaiting a signature. The Assembly previously passed with a vote of 47-30.

Legislators in the Golden State on Wednesday voted to raise the age someone can purchase a long gun from 18 to 21, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The bill was introduced by Sen. Anthony Portantino (D-La Cañada Flintridge) who wanted to address concerns he had after the Valentine's Day shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

The two most deadly recent school tragedies have been perpetrated by people under 21 with long guns,” Portantino said on the Senate floor.

The decision comes after Parkland students put pressure on state legislators to take action to raise the long gun purchase age.

“As a dad and a legislator, I am determined to help California act appropriately to the tragic events our country has faced recently due to gun violence,” Portantino said. “Out of respect for young people across our country who are demanding action we must answer their plea for help.”

The bill was opposed by pro-gun groups, such as the National Rifle Association (NRA).

“Passing a law that makes it illegal for a 20-year-old to purchase a shotgun for hunting or an adult single mother from purchasing the most effective self-defense rifle on the market punishes the law-abiding citizens for the evil acts of criminals,” Daniel Reid, the California state director of the NRA Institute for Legislative Action, wrote in a letter to legislators.

This would drastically reduce CA's annual homicide rate via rifles from its current 30-40 per year to thousands less.   ::)  This is the best way to protect our children from school shootings.  Next should be the requirement for transparent backpacks at all schools.

BREAKING NEWS

https://www.npr.org/sections/ed/2018/08/27/640323347/the-school-shootings-that-werent

.Gov outright lying about school shootings to impose more gun laws

This spring the U.S. Education Department reported that in the 2015-2016 school year, "nearly 240 schools ... reported at least 1 incident involving a school-related shooting." The number is far higher than most other estimates.

But NPR reached out to every one of those schools repeatedly over the course of three months and found that more than two-thirds of these reported incidents never happened. Child Trends, a nonpartisan nonprofit research organization, assisted NPR in analyzing data from the government's Civil Rights Data Collection.

We were able to confirm just 11 reported incidents, either directly with schools or through media reports.

11?!

11 out of 240 !!

Yep, and full body cavity searches upon entering any government buildings or areas where large groups of people congregate.

I'm really glad California is took action against those damned drinking straws.  What a menace those are.

They didn't outlaw plastic bags, they outlawed giving plastic bags for free. You can still pay a few cents each and get your shit in a plastic bag. Or buy one of the stores handy reusable bags for $1.99. ::)

That sounds like the left to me.  Finding ways to force people to pay extra for something....because the environment.

Their entire platform is centered around taking people's money and freedom.  Greedy little pigs.

That's is a simpleton's argument.  Yes the environment is important and we should look for ways to protect it.

But they have to be smart, effective solutions that don't infringe on people's liberty or stifle the economy.

Technological advancement is the answer, not banning fucking straws or charging people extra for plastic bags.

Single-use plastic is a particularly nasty form of plastic. These items have a shockingly short lifespan, normally used once and then discarded to landfill. Like other plastics, they never biodegrade and take hundreds of years to break down. Plastic straws are one such single-use item, and are ending up in our oceans by the thousands.

https://get-green-now.com/environmental-impact-plastic-straws/

And, as of early 2018, data from Ocean Conservancy’s TIDES system shows us that straws/stirrers are the 11th most found ocean trash in cleanups, making up about 3% of recovered trash.

I think for you it is just a matter of ignorance. Hopefully these articles will open your eyes a bit
Plastic straws made the 'top ten' items picked up on beach clean ups, and it's not hard to see why. Avid scuba diver Kasey Turner was snorkeling after work recently at a popular dive site in Manly, Australia. In the area she found 319 straws on a single 20-minute snorkel. 24 hours later Kasey went back and did another and found 294 in the exact same place.

OK great, we all agree that plastic is worse for the environment than other things that are biodegradable.

So, if we wave a magic wand and eliminate every single plastic straw in the United States......the result would be what?

How do we measure that?  Also, how do we reconcile that with the fact that China gives zero fucks and will continue to pollute the earth on a massive scale?

What is the next thing that we should ban?  How far do we take it?   At what cost?

Those are all good questions. I don't think there is a good guy bad guy thing here. I've been a horrible example of being environmentally aware for years. Only in the last 5-10 years have I realized we as a whole are screwing up the planet unnecessarily. I'm sickened by the fact we have islands of plastic floating in the ocean and you are right, many countries don't make an attempt yet to do anything about it so what's the point. For me, I think I look at it as whatever I can do to help is what I will focus on. We've been recycling for several years as far as our own trash. Some places make it more convenient than others that is for sure. The straw issue came to light in the last year, and we noticed resorts near beaches not giving straws unless requested, or paper straws which didn't bother me at all. It is one of those things where everything we do to help contributes in the big picture. I just choose to participate and try and help reduce the waste. If you don't, I don't know that it will matter. But collectively if we make an effort, I do think it will have an impact. We probably won't live to see it but that's ok

I get it broskie.   I think that technology and the free market will eventually solve these environmental problems if we continue to incentivize innovation.

I don't happen to think the answer is more government regulation of what people can and cannot do.  I think we can encourage people to be more environmentally responsible without forcing them.

I believe in the United States.  We are problem solvers.  We'll figure it out.

California has more road rage incidents than New York.  No way in hell you can have the same gun laws out here as LA, TX and FL.  Guaranteed a dozen shootings per day. You'll have dumbasses from cars shooting pedestrians.

I agree for the most part. Forcing a ban on plastic bags like what happened in Austin (State Supreme Court nixed it) was a bad idea. Many people were already bringing their own bags. What happened was the stores seized upon the opportunity to make more money. They didn't have to supply plastic bags and they could damn sure count on you forgetting to bring something and then being in a position where you had to buy a bag from them for 25cents or fit 12 items in your pockets. Government regulation on large manufacturing is probably still a good idea. Can you imagine what our rivers would look like had the government not stepped in years ago to force them to reduce waste?
