SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KABC) --
California students could soon start school later. State lawmakers approved a bill requiring middle and high schools to start no earlier than 8:30 a.m.

The proposal was shot down last year by school boards and teachers.

Supporters said later start times improve health and help offset sleep deprivation in teens.

The measure passed narrowly in both chambers following a debate that did not adhere to party lines.

"This is the single most cost-effective thing we can do to improve high school graduation rates," Assemblyman Jay Obernolte, R-Hesperia, said.

If Gov. Jerry Brown signs the bill, schools will have about three years to comply.

Currently, more than 80 percent of schools start before 8:30 a.m. Rural schools would be exempt from the mandate.

This is completely absurd. The sleep depravity in almost all cases is due to late night cell phone usage, texting, social media and within the last year, Fortnite not to mention gaming in general. Parents need to limit the use of phones with their kids and in most cases, take them away in the evenings until morning.

Even my school weight room and office, I have a basket specifically for phones. The second they walk, the phones are in the basket. It's a HUGE distraction.

Why do you think this is "idiocy"?

There have been studies showing that students learn better when they start school a bit later.

I assume you must be aware of this so what's the reason why you disagree ?

Not to mention all the other unintended consequences like adding after school busing to already over-crowded late afternoon traffic congestion, pushing back after school activities...

It's unrealistic to think this will give kids an additional hour to sleep  ::)  It comes down to parenting and discipline.

Horseshit. I just gave you the reasons. More out of touch liberals

maybe you two well informed conservatives could actually try READING the information I posted

start with this little snip

Quote
What we know about human development and, most recently, about the maturation of the teenage brain lends credence to the fact that “it’s a matter of biology, not choice” that teenagers are unable to fall asleep before about 10:45 p.m. and that their brains remain in sleep mode until about 8 a.m. This delay in the circadian rhythms for teenagers is directly related to hormonal changes during puberty. Most teens experience this so-called sleep phase shift only during adolescence; the shift will disappear as teens enter their 20s.

Teens need about 9.25 hours of sleep each night, a difficult amount to obtain when the brain doesn’t enter sleep mode until about 10:45 p.m. and when students must awaken early for a school day that begins before 8:30 a.m. Medical research has shown dramatic negative effects of sleep deprivation, especially in people who are chronically sleep-deprived. Depression, obesity, substance use and abuse, and increased car crashes are just some of the serious consequences. From the early 1990s to now, the medical research findings about the sleep needs of teens became a significant body of knowledge (Carskadon, Acebo, & Jenni, 2004; Jenni, Achermann, & Carskadon, 2005).

BTW - the study of circadian rhythms in adults in terms of long term health are recent and very interesting science

I recently read this book by one of the main researcher in the US

I know right wingers aren't big on reading and learning and things like that.  Much better to go off gut level reactions and shit that you just imagine to be true

Brought to you by the people who banned straws and want to force restaurants to make milk and water "default" options for parents with kids.

Talk about the pot calling the kettle Hebroe... ;D ;D

In somewhat related sensitiveness, I think Sacramento needs to kowtow toward inclusiveness and change the state capitol's name from the eeevile Christian based "Sacremento" to one more in touch with their true selves.  Meccamento.  Or maybe Pedomento?  How about Skinitbackamento?

Taught you another lesson, eh kiddo?  I bet your ego aches like your puckered dirtstar for an uncut muslime kabob...

Tourette's?  Tourettes's is for pussies. My talent for belittle such as you was forged long before you were whelped.

Give it up, little manlette.  You are ill equipped to deal with someone with a barely average IQ like me.  If you play the Cucktard Card, expect to be Trumped.  ;D  I am no longer a follower of the Nazarene so expect to experience controlled burning, aka back burning.  This will result in a scorched ego for such as you.
