A far-right politician dubbed “Brazil’s Donald Trump” was stabbed during a campaign rally on Thursday. The incident, which occurred when Jair Bolsonaro was being carried on the shoulders of supporters in Juiz de Fora, was captured on video.

Bolsonaro has taken to wearing a bulletproof vest on the campaign trail in recent weeks but the blade seems to have hit in the abdomen, below the vest. He was immediately taken to a local hospital and his son tweeted that his father’s wounds were “only superficial” and said he “is OK.”

Police told the Associated Press that they have a suspect in custody. The man, police said, was jumped by Bolsonaro’s supporters after the stabbing and badly beaten.

Bolsonaro has drawn a big following in Brazil for his tough talk on crime and lack of a filter. In an article last year calling him “Brazil’s Donald Trump,” The Economist described Bolsonaro as a “religious nationalist and former army captain, he is anti-gay, pro-gun, and an apologist for dictators who tortured and killed Brazilians between 1964 and 1985.”

He is also currently second in Brazil’s presidential polls, trailing only former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who is in jail and has been barred from running for another term.

Brazil far-right candidate Bolsonaro in stable condition after stabbing

BRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazil’s front-running far-right presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro is in serious but stable condition in hospital following “successful” surgery after he was stabbed while campaigning on Thursday, his running mate said.

Flavio Bolsonaro, the candidate’s son, wrote on Twitter that his father had been wounded in the liver, lung and intestine. “He lost a lot of blood, arrived at the hospital ... almost dead. He appears to have stabilized now,” he said.

General Antonio Hamilton Mourao, Bolsonaro’s running mate, told Reuters by telephone that the candidate’s condition was stable but still worrying.

“He underwent surgery, which was successful and he is doing OK,” Mourao said. “But his state remains delicate.”

A hospital spokeswoman in the city of Juiz de Fora in Minas Gerais state, where the attack took place, confirmed to Reuters that Bolsonaro had been undergoing surgery but provided no details on his state nor his wounds.

Brazil's Jair Bolsonaro 'lost 40% of blood in stabbing'

The far-right politician was attacked at a campaign rally in Minas Gerais.

Doctors say he suffered a deep and life-threatening stab wound in his intestines, but is now recovering well.

The controversial politician won supporters for his tough stance on crime, but has outraged many in Brazil with racist and homophobic comments.

Polls suggest he will get the most votes in the first round of the October presidential elections if former President Luis Inácio Lula da Silva remains blocked from standing, but is unlikely to win a run-off.

Left-wing Lula had been the long-standing favourite but he is currently in prison , appealing against a ban on his candidacy that was imposed after his conviction for corruption.

Hospital director Eunice Dantas told reporters on Friday that Mr Bolsonaro had lost more than two litres of blood, and was in shock, when he arrived.

He is now stable and "in excellent clinical condition" after being operated on, she added, although he will need to spend at least a week in hospital.

Mr Bolsonaro's family say the knife had penetrated 12cm (4.7in) into his abdomen, Reuters news agency reports.

He has now been transferred to a hospital in Sao Paulo.

In a video circulated on social media on Friday, Mr Bolsonaro spoke from his hospital bed, saying he had been in "intolerable" pain and had "never hurt anyone".

His son Flavio also tweeted a photo of his father making the thumbs-up gesture from his hospital bed.

"Local police in Juiz de Fora confirmed to Reuters that the suspect, Adelio Bispo de Oliveira, 40, was in custody and that he appeared to be mentally disturbed.

Oliveira was affiliated with the leftwing Socialism and Liberty Party from 2007 to 2014, the party said in a written statement, in which it repudiated the violence."

Bolsonaro: Brazil politician's health 'improving' after stabbing

Doctors at the hospital where Jair Bolsonaro is being treated say the far-right Brazilian presidential candidate's health has "improved markedly" since he was stabbed at a campaign rally on Thursday.

They said he is spending more time out of bed but is still fed intravenously.

Mr Bolsonaro, 63, suffered a deep and life-threatening wound to his intestines and lost 40% of his blood.

A 40-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the attack.

'On God's orders'
Local media reported that the man, Adelio Bispo de Oliveira, told investigators that he was acting "on God's orders". Police said they would investigate his mental health.

Bispo de Oliveira, suspected of stabbing Brazilian presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro, to transfer him to a federal prison in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso state, at Francisco Alvares de Assis airport in Juiz de Fora, Brazil, September 8, 2018.

He was grabbed by supporters of Mr Bolsonaro immediately after the attack and manhandled and beaten before being taken into police custody.

Polls suggest Mr Bolsonaro is the favourite to win the first round of Brazil's presidential elections on 7 October with an estimated 22% of the vote, if former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva cannot run.

Lula is serving a 12-year jail sentence for corruption and has been barred by Brazil's highest electoral court from running but his legal team has said it will appeal against that decision.

But while opinion polls put Mr Bolsonaro ahead if Lula is taking out of the equation, they also suggest that the far-right candidate would not fare that well were the elections to go into a second round, which happens when no candidate gains more than 50% of the vote.

Mr Bolsonaro of the Social Liberal Party (PSL) is a divisive politician whom some analysts have compared to US President Donald Trump.
