Ffs... this is a 20min drive away from where I live. East York/West Scarborough is becoming the 3rd world very quickly.
Greektown (in East York) is quickly becoming East Yorkistan with a huge mosque and stores that sell carpets and burkas and shit. There have been 2 or 3 shootings there this summer, which is sad as hell. Used to be pretty pleasant area with nice restaurants and bars. I moved out of East York as soon as I realized its quickly becoming a dump.
I lived there for about 4 years and within the last few months of living there someone has shit in the stairwell, vandalized my neighbor's Audi, a woman SHIT IN THE ELEVATOR in front of me (while standing up, I actually have no idea how she managed that), and at 2 or 3 in the morning you would hear people yelling in the hallways in Arabic at each other.
There were plenty of South Asians (Indians, Bangladeshis, etc...) who lived in that area who were hard working, professional and just wanted to make a better life for their families. But even they started moving out in droves as the undesirables started arriving.

One can only hope the woman you encountered in the elevator was physically ill. Can't imagine how bad that would smell. It makes me gag just imagining it. Do you suppose some of these folks who defecate in more or less public areas, have nowhere else to go? It's one of the many frustrations people in Portland have expressed, now that homeless folks are moving into residential neighborhoods and camping on folks' front lawns.

If this hotel is a refugee holding camp, it would not be a place I'd choose to stay at. -Can't stand poorly behaved children, crying babies and crowds. Stayed at a boutique hotel in Paris once. The only negative I remember is that the bathroom was so tiny you could do all your business at once without moving.    We moved to an upscale Paris hotel for the rest of our stay. The bathrooms were very large and accommodating. Once stayed at Circus Circus in Vegas....never again!
