Teddy Atlas is still wayyyyyyy to bitter to ever give a completely honest opinion of Tyson.

Totally overrated as a trainer and insufferable to listen to on boxing commentary with the long, rambling nonsense that comes out of his mouth.

Great interview...more like a speech though.  Whether he's bitter or not, he still makes valid points.

He's spot on. Tyson was all body and no brain. When he lost the tutelage that won the belts he just spiraled out of control. Just the way it was.

Whether he's bitter or not, he still makes valid points.

Both of statements these are true, but his point that a champion is made by overcoming adversity and Tyson never did is false. Mike was so GREAT so YOUNG and he lost the desire to dominate just as early.

Some still claim he threw the Buster Douglas fight, but regardless after that fight he was never the same. The Razor Ruddock showed he didnt care anymore, he was collecting paychecks. But his talent, skill, speed and power were UNMATCHED for years but his heart wasn't in it (whether it was because, as Teddy alluded to, he was afraid to go deeper into competition and get exposed as someone being better or he just didn't care because his good enough was still great). At his peak he may have been the GOAT, but wherever he's ranked in history he'll always be honored amongst the best.

And that's what Teddy really hates, that a guy like Tyson was so talented, skilled and dominant wasn't consumed by the sport but by being a "scumbag".

Teddy's recollection is that Cus wanted Mike to Make Catskill, New York, and eventually America, famous. That whatever wrongful behaviors he engaged in - like sexually harassing Atlas's niece or whatever, and other women around town, as well as his brash and unruly behavior - would be tolerated and accepted in return for him being serious about his training and becoming the next big thing. He wouldn't put up with that and was fired for that reason.

To give you an idea how much pro boxing pays, Buster Douglas got a $7 million payday from their one and only fight in 1990. That was a hell of a lot of money back then, perhaps double that today. He had a few more fights between then and 1999 when he retired, but basically he's been living comfortably on a farm in Ohio with what he made from those 10 rounds of boxing.

Also true.

Compare Mike and his situation  to Tiger Woods.

Both prodigy's, who's talent was so far above the competition they made it look easy. Both got caught thinking they were above their sport and the law/society had to bend the rules for them.

Their behavior was unethical. Mike suffered a loss and went to prison. Tiger was exposed and suffered an injury.

Both made come backs and weren't the same. The big difference though was Mike content with being good enough, Tiger was/is still driven to be the best.

It's the LeBron/Jordan debate. LeBron may be the greatest single talent to ever play basketball but Jordan was CONSUMED with being the best (and winninh), whether or not his physical talents said they were.

That's not saying LeBron isn't committed to being the best player he can be but his passion isn't viewed as being the same as Jordan's.  Mike was the boxing version of LeBron but boxing took to much time away from Mikes other interests.

Douglas grossed $24,075,000 from his bout with Holyfiled, but that amount was warranted because of what he did in those aforementioned 10 rounds.

Oh yeah he made more money later on, but he even said he only needed the Tyson fight to be comfortable. Insane paydays.

That’s a fella who has spent considerable time in self-reflection and contemplation of the human existence.

Thank you. I really enjoyed watching that.

MJ was also a massive gambler, heavy drinker and used to Smoke a fat cuban on his way to games.  He lived a lavish lifestyle and still dominated.  I'm sure if MJ was on the routine a lot of Athletes are on today that he would have been that much better.
