How long until AI is racist?

I was reading this article on BBC about how they’re developing AI to predict where crime might happen similar to the idea of “hot-spotting” that is done in some of today’s departments. My question, if and when this will be deemed racist and will it actually show the differences? Also, will the plug get pulled if these differences lean more towards one racial group over others?

The last line in the article is a bit ominous, as it talks about giving up freedom for more surveillance. It’s only a matter of time before big brother is watching us all.
