Notes - Fires in Los Angeles
« on: November 12, 2018, 02:19:37 PM »
Been a whirlwind of a weekend for many of us here in the Western San Fernando Valley, Thousand Oaks, and Malibu areas. Started Thursday evening with winds of up to 50 miles an hour, spewing the fires all over the place, and moving fast.   Jumped the freeway (101) around Thursday at 3am, and jsut kept going to the ocean (Malibu).

Thursday late night, around 12:30am, we got a call from our in-laws that the entire community was out of power, and they needed to evacuate (Fire Line on the Ridge), and they stayed with us for 3 days - went home yesterday.  Their house is fine. So is ours.

We live on the border of West Hills, in Woodland Hills, next to Hidden Hills.  We are under evacuation both nights, but not mandatory like others were, so we stayed. Friday night crazy smoky, but all good (did not turn on any vents or heater or air).

These pictures were from Friday evening on the way home, and that is Castle Peak, where we go hiking a lot (there is a cave there that we like to go to)

By Sunday, the fires that you see here were out, except in Bell Canyon, where a few houses went down.  They are still not allowed to go in the area about a half mile away from us, and today, because of hot spots and another fire near Simi Valley, only to get essential items.

Today is Veterans Day out here, so schools are closed, but for us, with the Santa Ana winds blowing, there is still a threat, although by tomorrow, it should be better in our area.

But very minimal loss of life here in Southern California, 2 people.  Unlike the craziness of the Northern California fire, which devastated the town. We were lucky. We lost the old sets of where they filmed M.A.S.H and also the western town where they filmed Dr. Quinn/Westworld, but in the end, this is just property, not lives.  We never lost power at our house, but so many friends did, as well as 250,000 evacuated.  And cell powers are burned.  For those that had T-Mobile out here, the entire region was out Friday afternoon until Saturday or longer. No service, nothing, which they did not expect either.

RON, Thanks for the above update!

I've been calling family members daily who have a home by Ventura Blvd and Topanga Canyon Road and they told me that the fire was like a horse-shoe surroinding their place ... but six blocks away  ... so based on that conversation ... they were fortunate.

What was rhe damage to the west side of Topanga Canyon? I believe that the "Barbarian Brothers" (old name) have or had a home towards the top but on the west side of that canyon.

And  how far down the side of Topanga towards the freeway did that fire reach?

Everson had one of the larger homes along that side of Topanga (the home with all the cactus plants on both sies of the road thnks to  Keff ) whch he sold a while back.

Did the fire spread that far?

Did that great Mexican restaurant in Calabasas suffer any damage!?

Good to hear that all is well with you and your family! And thanks for the update!

Is there any possuble solution to prevent this catastrophy from re-occuring?

Trump doesnt care about California.

Are you insinuating that Trump is somehow "responsible" for the fires?
Or, is he not doing enough to extinguish them?

How would you like Trump to satisfactorily address this situation?

A lot - it is said that 70% of the Santa Monica Mountains burned.  I know that the where we hike, Malibu State Creek Park, Reagan Ranch, Paramount Ranch trails all were burned, but we have not seen it, just heard. It is probably the worst fire in that region in history.

Yes, I have been to that house a few times when he had it.  I don't think the fire went that far at all, he lives closer to the San Fernando Valley, not really up in the mountains.

I think this was caused by an explosion or sparking at a SoCal Edison transformer or plant right where the fire originated.  Yes, they needed to really take care of their aging facility up there and lets see when they investigate, just what they find.  It will lead to that, in my opinion.   When the winds are going at 50-60 miles an hour, that one explosion with fire can carry and produce 10 fires within a few minutes up in the mountains where the brush was ripe

Every CA state senator and assemblyman voted for that bill - it was unanimous.  But Brown knows what's best for the state.

Has Trump mentioned the California fires at all? Seems I missed it, if he did.

Neither do the demoncrats in charge of Commiefornia.

Presumably, your referring to California's elected officals. There's a way to fix this; vote for republicans.

If you are right, SoCal Edison should be heavily fined. Do you think this might happen?

If memory serves me right, most of the native vegetation in the Santa Monica mountains, such as Chapparal will quickly grow back. Of course the majestic cost live oaks and sycamores will take decades to reach their full potential.

RECENTLY read that it's also believed that the PG&E power lines up in Northern California fire which completely destroyed PARADISE  was the cause of that humongus fire which took many lives and still uncounted.

We try but the freeloaders that are allowed to vote in CA have to vote demoncrat to keep getting their free stuff paid for with my taxes.

If you are right, SoCal Edison should be heavily fined. Do you think this might happen?

The story goes back and forth but last I heard the state has given them permission to raise rates in order to pay for the lawsuits that will absolutely come from their neglect of their equipment. So the people of CA will once again suffer with higher rates.
