Roof de-icing cable
« on: November 27, 2018, 07:08:30 PM »
Anyone know anything about them? My roof is an ice dam machine and need to install something to prevent them from forming.

Any suggestions?

Sounds more like you need a ridge vent to prevent heat in your attic from building up and causing the ice to form in the first place. I had similar problems when I lived in northern NY. The ridge vent stopped it ( and additional attic insulation)

You're an idiot.

First off...INSULATE. Lack of insulation is why you're damning. Hot cold hot cold. You might even have a mold problem so look into that.

You're attic should be the SAME TEMP IT IS OUTSIDE.

Meaning: If its 80 outside...its 80 in your attic. An attic is not a livable space.

Gable, ridge, fans...whatever...but his main problem is INSULATION especially at the floor of the attic because HEAT MUST BE ESCAPING.

Apparently more than you.

Ice damn form because of heat escaping. Understand?

Even if he were to put a metal roof on its not fixing the underlying problem.

Spray foam. Why? Because you don't need a plastic vapor barrier with that and it seals all air/heat leaks.

If he has a bathroom EXHAUST FAN THAT IS NOT INSULATED...that WILL CAUSE HEAT ESCAPE...ALSO CONDENSATION.

Code now is that all bathroom exhaust fan ducts MUST BE INSULATED.

Regular insulation you should have an air gap between roof and insulation.

ITS NOT CAUSED BY A ROOF YOU DUMMY...ITS CAUSED BY NOT ENOUGH OR IMPROPPERLY INSTALLED INSULATION

Hi, all of you say helps but would you be willing to bet your account on my answer? I mean, you got your ass handed to you the last time you pulled this shit. I’m not even googling my answers.

So I’ll ask you again, what’s your experience in the roofing industry?

Had pretty bad ice dam damage.  Put a heating cable on the roof and it hasn't been a problem since.   A possible issue is finding a power supply, but I had enough extra slack to run the extra cable down a drainpipe, and I just plug it into a garage outlet.

You're just upset you lost your gym.

You fail to realize dum dum that I lived in Canada....not this SoCal 55 degree's Oh Its Cold Out Bullshit.

When it snows...in SoCal...check your roof to see if its melting...that means heat is bleeding through...or...get a FLIR.

You're idea of a roofer is going down to the Home Depot and picking up one of the "Latino Boys" who lays shingles.

Heat escape is the MAIN CAUSE OF ICE DAMNING. Heat is getting into the attic causing the freeze thaw.

I'm sure one of your "experts" put some vermiculite in your home...or are you living in a car now?

The SLOPE OF A ROOF has nothing to do with it. Why? Because even if snow is on your roof...if your ATTIC is sealed...it shouldn't be a problem...even though in Montreal on a sunny winter day it has been known to melt snow that is 6 inches...BUT...gutters should be clear and not plugged.

Listen Bub, you're out of your league with this. Go post some Facebook/Instagrammer stuff about torn pecs and argue with Strawface on the Poltics board.

Mother fucker, I don’t care if you lived in fucking Antarctica in a blizzard 80 below freezing. Just because you lived somewhere where it’s “cold” doesn’t make you a roofing expert. Jesus Christ, shut the fuck up, is living in Canada make you some kind of “expert” on roofing? Hey asshole, since you’re a computer wiz, take a look at my past posts and see what I did for over 20 years before I got into doing what do full time.

I AM AN EXPERT IN IT!!!!!!

The first thing I did when I bought a house in California was RIP OUT ALL THE FLEXIBLE DUCT WORK.

Why?

Because its GARBAGE!

Do you know why? BECAUSE OF RESISTANCE.

Mexicans can run that flexible duct work because any dummy can do it. Not many Mexicans are tin knockers or know what a Pittsburgh Joint is.

Sorry Bub, you are out of your league on this one. I've run many HVAC systems in my life and worked with many construction agencies.

In fact...I just helped put in Geo Thermal heating at a friends house. The filters alone on the system run about $500 every 6-12 months with a MERV rating of 10.

Listen...I have some computer things to attend to....one of my many areas of expertise...REMEMBER I AM MENSA MAN.

Wait, because you bought a house and ripped out some antiquated duct work makes you and expert? Also, you do understand that HVAC and Roofing are two different trades and HVAC contractors call in roofing contractors to roof the units in, right? FYI, junior, I was in the commercial roofing industry for over 20 years as an apprentice, journeyman, foreman and superintendent. After that, commercial roof consultant, commercial roof systems design and commercial inspector, after that, residential and commercial contractor. Last of my major jobs (consultating, design and inspection) were the Ford and GM plants throughout the mid-west and east. Last Foreman and Superintendent jobs were overseeing the roofing systems at the LA Convention Center and the then, First Interstate Building in LA. Feel free to state your roofing expertise again?

Coach these are good points. Alex is providing us a lot of information as well.  Getbig is one of the best places to learn about anything. I think Henda, Robcguns and Falcon should weigh in as well so we can get a real consensus.

That said do you think based on the events of this past weekend and their reported financial status, Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell would be better off in commercial or residential roofing or removing HVAC ductwork from older homes?

I'll walk with you on this topic. Started my biz career with the pink panther company and have built four houses in NH.

If the roof is warm the damns will build. Proper attic insulation-R40 and venting (roof and soffit) will keep the roof cold and stop damns from building. Also make sure anything which penetrates the ceiling is sealed (caulked etc.) and any access to the attic is sealed and insulated if possible.

Oh God, you guys are missing this completely. Do you actually think building codes are the (for example because we have no idea where where slapper is from) the same all over the country? Do you not think that this was already taken into consideration? I’ll give you an example just here in California. Years ago (yes, while I was still in roofing) we owned a home in Big Bear, like most of The snowy regions in California the roof pitch was (is) 10/12, 11/12, 12/12 as opposed a 3/12 or 4/12 in the lower lying regions. To “experts” why do you suppose this is?
