The Peek-a-Boo style was ideal for Mike Tyson. He started to drift away from that after leaving the Cus D-Amoto/Kevin Rooney camp. Cus commented that by 16 years old he started slipping punches and it was getting harder to find sparring partners for him.

I often imagine how things would have gone if Cus didn't die so early in Mike's career. I really think he would have been the greatest of all time.

Tyson was often considered just someone who was very aggressive and could hit hard. This overshadowed the fact that while under the Cus D'Amato camp he was a supremely skilled and technical boxer. I remember during the 80s watching a training vid where Rooney would be calling out numbers that represented various combinations. Tyson, often considered a meat head, had to study and memorize these codes and apply them on a moments notice. His training under D'Amato was very disciplined and scientific. D'Amato, that pudgy old man, was a boxing genius.

Similar to Jon "Bones" Jones, it's sad to see such unworldly talent wasted or not taken to its full potential.

You think Jon's talent has been wasted? Despite being out for a while, when all is said and done, I don't think he'll have missed out on that much. Say he beats gus, maybe DC, and gets the heavyweight title. He'll easily be considered the undisputed GOAT.

I already believe he is the GOAT.

Yeah but there are other people in the conversation. If Jon gets 2-3 more key wins though, no one will even argue, imo.

Obvious, both Tyson and Jones were wildly successful and are considered one of the greats. But due to personal issues and character flaws they didn't reach their full potential.

Guys at that level of fighting are rarely choir boys.

I think Jones is the GOAT in MMA. An argument can be made for Georges St. Pierre to some respects, but his safe approach to fighting muddies the justification a bit.

I think Jones can very well beat anyone from light heavyweight down to the flyweights. I also think he can technically beat all the heavyweights, but I am not completely counting out guys like DC & Cain at heavyweight.

I would have loved to have seen Jones vs. Fedor and DC vs. Fedor, it would have been epic.

Greatest MMA fighters of all time.

Jon Jones
DC
Fedor
Cain Velasquez
Anderson Silva
George St. Pierre

In that order.

I can't disagree.

Although, I would probably stack them this way:

Jones (Because he probably would beat the living shit out of all of them)
DC (Because the man is talented and would beat the shit out of everyone not named Jon Jones)
St. Pierre (Because he is a great technician and multi-division weight holder)
Anderson Silva (Because his run was very impressive)
Cain (Because when he does show signs of life every few years, it looks good. Although, he hasn't held onto the belt long enough to have a great run)
Fedor (Because he was a thing of great wonder in the wild west of MMA that was riddled with steroids and all other sorts of illicit drugs. Plus, he looked like a fat Russian that loved beer but somehow managed to continue to win)

Again, I think that Jones is the best MMA fighter to date. I just think he wasted a lot of good years because of his personal issues and character flaws. Of course, fighters can't be expected to be choir boys, especially when most men aren't choirs boys, but both Tyson and Jones were just irresponsible and reckless. They were blessed with a talent. A talent I believed was given to them by God. They didn't train or sacrifice any more than a lot of their competition. They were given a gift. They should show appreciation and gratitude for this gift. That was one of the points D.C. brought up to Jon. That he has this gift but spits in the face of God by how he squanders it with such irresponsible and just stupid behavior.

Tyson was amazing until women, prescription drugs and alcohol entered his life. Take away that and he would have had a much longer run. A prime Tyson is easily in everyone's top 5 of all time list.

Don't forget about the loss of Jim Jacobs.

The loss of Jacobs was huge.

Don't forget Don King.

Like they say, you can take the boy out of the ghetto, but you can't take the ghetto out of the boy.

Tyson's biggest mistake was firing Rooney after Kevin said Mike got played by Robin Givens.

She lied to him about being pregnant and said they had to get married. She was pissed that he was also dating Naomi Campbell and Suzette Charles at the same time he was seeing her. All three knew about each other.

She was never pregnant. She faked the whole thing including claiming to have had a miscarriage in New Jersey while Mike was away in New York training for Spinks.

Once Rooney was gone, Tyson bought into his own hype. He stopped fighting and just tried to intimidate every opponent like a bully.

Douglas was not intimidated.

It was the beginning of the end.

He was never the same.

Which resulted after the death of D'Amato. Tyson still had the mind of a child and Cus was the father that he respected and listened to -- and needed.

This ^^^^^^^^

I didn't even mention Don King as it is a given. Once he got his claws into the fatherless Tyson it was all over.

This is IMO a very fascinating interview Joe Rogan did with former Tyson trainer, Teddy Tyson. Considering their history, I'm not sure how to take this but Teddy is obviously speaking from the heart and he sure knows Tyson better than most as he was there from the beginning. And Teddy has a checkered past as well. Still, if someone is interested in Tyson this is a fascinating "confession".

You could tell his inner circle were all yes men later in his career especially after his prison release.  He didn't even look like he was training hard at all in the gym just light workouts compared to what he was doing in the early years.  He needed discipline as much as any other fighter to be successful.
