I agree about going after the businesses that employ illegals, but I think the wall would absolutely act as a deterrent for illegals, drug smugglers, etc. 

At what cost would a wall deter illegals?  How much of an effect will it have versus the cost?  That's why i don't think its an overstatement to say the wall is a stupid idea.  Hell, listening to all the slams on Canada and its socialism would make me want to go there if i was an illegal.  Is there a illegal immigration problem there?

Cracking down on employers far more than we are doing now is the answer.  Also making it federally illegal for states to allow illegals to have driver's licenses, register cars, get government aid, etc. will go a long way.

It seems, the people/companies financially support both republican and democratic representatives do not want that.   They will however, settle for allowing them in to get votes, or to keep them out to get government money to spend billions on a wall, that isn't the answer to the problem.

And, what makes any conversation about building a wall worthless is that, despite Trump's lies, no new wall has been built or likely ever will be. Some existing fences are under repair and that's about it. So far, Trump's main claim to fame is that the U. S. economy has been doing well up until recently when it started falling.

It is illegal in this country to employ undocumented (illegal) immigrants. Temporary agricultural positions require an H-2A visa. Temporary non-agricultural workers need a H-2B visa. The problem is policing this. Small businesses are sometimes overlooked.

At what cost would a wall deter illegals?  Nobody knows. But the possibility of saving American citizens lives, curbing some drug and human smuggling and saving some taxes is very appealing.

How much of an effect will it have versus the cost?  I've seen illegal immigrant costs claimed to run the US upwards of 150 billion per year, if a 5 billion wall saves taxpayers 10% per year, it pays for itself within 5 years.

I completely agree with cracking down on employers that use illegals. I wish it was federally illegal for states, like CA, to give illegals drivers licenses, registration, gov aid. It very well should be. But I believe part of combating this is tighter border security all along our border, not just at a few points of entry.
