On Friday, Freedom Caucus member Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, said President Trump should let the Democrats keep the government shutdown until “hell freezes over” or they agree to fund the wall.

In an interview on Fox News, Gohmert reminded the audience that the government is not really “shut down” in the way most media headlines suggest.

“We already appropriated 75 percent of the government’s funding, so when people talk about a shutdown, it’s really only a part of 25 percent, only a part, because the essential workers are the only ones that come,” Gohmert said. “Now there’s some of us that say, let’s make notes of which ones are essential and which ones aren’t and then let the nonessential go.”

Turning to the question of border security, Gohmert was asked if incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and the rest of the Democrats who refuse to fund a border security wall are responsible for the harm that comes to migrants seeking to take advantage of the United States’ weak borders.

Gohmert, a former Texas state judge, noted that in American civil law a party can be liable for harm to others for creating an “attractive nuisance.” He used the example of a child who wanders into a swimming pool and drowns because there was no fence around it. The owner of the pool would be liable for harm inflicted by his negligence in refusing to put up a fence. Gohmert said Democrats should be liable for the harm that comes to migrants attempting to cross the unsecured American border.

“I don’t know that there’s going to be an apology, but [Democrats] sure do owe one,” Gohmert said.

“Now to them, this is all about politics. ‘Gee, if we can just keep a wall from being built, then Trump loses the next election.’ Well, he may not, if he stands firm and it’s clear they’re the ones that are not protecting America,” he continued.

Asked how long the government should stay closed, Gohmert again noted it’s only partially closed and said it should remain so “’till hell freezes over.”

“Because we owe it to our country, and the best thing we can do compassionately for Mexico, for Central America, is not give them money that ends up in the hands of the drug cartels; it’s to secure the border so the drugs quit coming and we don’t lose 70,000 more lives a year, and Mexico becomes a top 10 economy because we drop the corruption. That’s compassion.”

Oh the irony

yes, it's so ironic that someone made a grammatical error on a message board

that never happens (I know you have never done it before)

Any word if dumb Louie and his staff are still collecting a check while the government is shut down?

The Dems will cave. They don’t wanna let it become apparent that most of their big government model is not needed.

With no signs from the Capitol or the White House about a potential budget deal, the shutdown is expected to extend into next year. CNBC

I'm old, but no so old that I don't know when the new year begins. ;)  Anyway, there is nothing magic about January 1st with regards to the shutdown. Congress reconvenes on January 3rd which also doesn't guarantee action on the shutdown.

Trump threatens to close 'Southern Border entirely' if Dems don't fund wall

President Trump on Friday threatened to "close the Southern Border entirely" if Democrats do not agree to provide money to "finish" building a wall on the Mexican border.

Trump made the threat as a partial government shutdown enters its seventh day with no end in sight.

The shutdown began on Saturday after Democrats rejected demands from Trump that $5 billion be included for the wall in a measure to keep the government open.

"We will be forced to close the Southern Border entirely if the Obstructionist Democrats do not give us the money to finish the Wall & also change the ridiculous immigration laws that our Country is saddled with," the president tweeted.

He also criticized past presidents and Congresses over the nation's current immigration laws.

"Hard to believe there was a Congress & President who would approve!"

The tweet was one of several Trump wrote on Friday morning as the shutdown increasingly looked like it could drag well into 2019.

Trump in a second tweet tied the fight over the wall to another of his signature issues: trade. He said the U.S. was losing money through the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and that closing the border would be a "profit making operation."

The U.S runs a trade deficit with Mexico, but outside observers have said that closing the border could cause economic chaos given the amount of trade and people who legally cross the border every day.

According to a report earlier this month by CBS News, about $558 billion in goods flowed across the border in both directions last year. It found that the U.S. exported $243.3 billion in goods across the border along with $58 billion in services.

Nearly a half million people enter the US. each day at various entry points on the southern border, according to a Wilson Center report cited by CBS.

IMO none of them should be getting paid while this is going on and every single one of them should be taking a permanent pay cut.

Please explain why they will cave.  They won't.  Absolutely no incentive to, as Trump is the dumbass that fucked up in his meeting with them saying he will own the shutdown.  Dems will pass legislation to start the government up when they take control of the house next week anyway. Mr. Art of the Deal hahaha.  Art of being a complete fucking dumb ass.

As I said, the Dems are the party of big government. The longer this drags on, the more it becomes obvious that most of the bureaucracy isn’t needed.

Man, does anyone who voted for Trump not want the wall? I voted for him and I don’t want it. Maybe a border fence along the whole thing and extra border patrol, but the wall just looks stupid. If we just keep turning them away and turn up the heat on those who employ illegals, that would take care of the problem in my opinion. Find and deport all illegals with criminal records and then find a way to keep the ones who will legitimately add to our economy. No more “sanctuary cities” or any of that shit. Kick those mayors out of office. This problem can be fixed without a big ugly wall.

why didn't Mr Trump get funding for his wall while the Republican Party in total power?
Surly the energy that delivered the tax cuts could also deliver the wall funds?

The history of walls put up to keep others out is poor, they work better were both sides want a wall.
As it is unlikely the US will spend such money on a wall it is always available as a tub thumping distraction to be used by Mr Trump then he gets defensive

He needed 60 votes from the senate, which he doesn’t have. Not agreeing or disagreeing with what you’ve said, I’m just pointing out the “why” it didn’t get done.

It wasn’t one of my primary issues which were taxes, regulations, and not getting involved in stupid fucking wars in the Middle East.

That said, I don’t see any reason to not do it. Big walls do make for good neighbors. The spending part is a non issue. The biggest driver of debt is the social programs, Social Security and Medicare, and the Dems obviously don’t want to do anything about those two. So their opposition on the basis of fiscal responsibility is bullshit.

Maybe you should move to Southern California for a while? Wall/fence, whatever you want to call it, we need one. We also need an increase in personnel, change in the rules of engagement and an immigration policy overhaul.

I can say that the last couple of times I visited Southern California it seemed like I was in a foreign country. It's not at all the same place where I grew up and lived.  Several years ago, coming home from Germany my wife and I went through customs at LAX. There seemed to be almost no one working there who spoke English and those that did had Asian accents. L.A. is very definitely a melting pot of people from all over the world.

Trump Issues Executive Order Freezing Pay Rate for Federal Workers

An executive order was issued on Friday by President Trump freezing federal workers’ pay for the 2019 year. This follows through on a pledge from earlier this year to get rid of an across-the-board pay increase among workers.

In August, Trump had announced he would cancel the 2.1% pay increase starting January due to “serious economic conditions.”

The Hill reported the order also cancels the “locality pay increase,” which adjusts paychecks based on the region of the country where workers are posted. The order however does not impact the 2.6% pay raise for military in 2019 because it was part of a defense spending bill Trump signed in August.

This announcement comes as the partial government shutdown enters its second week, with hundreds of thousands of federal employees entering the new year with furloughed or working without pay. Trump said the government will remain shutdown until he gets $5 billion for the wall from Democrats.

The executive order affects most of the 2.1 million federal employees around the nation, about 1.7 million of which live in areas outside of the Washington, D.C., metro area, The Hill reported.

The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), the U.S.’s largest union representing federal workers, asked Congress to reconsider the Senate’s pay proposal plan which included 1.9% pay bump in its spending plans for the next year.

AFGE’s National President J. David Cox Sr. says that Trump’s plan is a snub to federal workers.

“President Trump’s plan to freeze wages for these patriotic workers next year ignores the fact that they are worse off today financially than they were at the start of the decade,” said Cox, in a statement obtained by The Hill. “Federal employees have had their pay and benefits cut by over $200 billion since 2011, and they are earning nearly 5 percent less today than they did at the start of the decade.”

Is that your only hangup?  That's what you've been spouting over and over.  You agree a wall is needed, it's just a matter of who pays for it?  ::)

Dems seemED to agree before Trump came along.  ::)

Spelling not grammar.

it absolutely could be a spelling error (go back and look - if you care - which I assume you don't because who the fuck does)

I'm just a random anonymous person on an obscure message board

It's not like I ever made a moronic comment such as  "I know words, I have the best words"

It's not like I'm the POTUS making both grammatical and spelling errors on a daily basis on forum like Twitter that is read by millions of people every day

That shit our weird friend and so called moderator absolutely crazy....assuming he actually cares about such things

they also probably assumed there was no need for the US Taxpayer to pay for it when Trump said over and over and over again that Mexico was going to pay for it
