A New York laboratory has cut its ties with James Watson, the Nobel prize-winning scientist who helped discover the structure of DNA, over “reprehensible” comments in which he said race and intelligence are connected.

The Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory said it was revoking all titles and honors conferred on Watson, 90, who led the lab for many years.

The lab “unequivocally rejects the unsubstantiated and reckless personal opinions Dr James D Watson expressed on the subject of ethnicity and genetics”, its president, Bruce Stillman, and chair of the board of trustees, Marilyn Simons, said in a statement.

“Dr Watson’s statements are reprehensible, unsupported by science, and in no way represent the views of CSHL, its trustees, faculty, staff, or students. The laboratory condemns the misuse of science to justify prejudice.”

With Francis Crick, Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins, the scientist was one of the researchers who discovered the double helix structure of DNA in 1953.

In 2007, the lab removed him as chancellor after he told the Sunday Times he was “inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa” because “all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours, whereas all the testing says, not really”.

I understand. We cant "create or verify" data that would suggest a race is intellectually inferior. There are many ramifications to this and of theres no proof it's true we can label those who suggest otherwise as bigots.

My issue is that they discredit everything the Doctor did as if that's a legitimate response to his comments.

What if he said less educated areas are worse off than highly educated areas? No one would oppose that line of thinking, the data can be extrapolated so it isnt race based.

The Doctor shouldn't have said race was a factor for intelligence (or whatever he said) but i'm sure at his age he doesn't care anymore.

In a documentary aired recently on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) in the United States, “American Masters: Decoding Watson”, Dr Watson re-stated his view that black people are less intelligent than white, because of their genetics. Scientists everywhere condemned his comments. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory on Long Island, New York, to which he has been affiliated for more than 60 years, immediately stripped him of his remaining links, including his honorary title of Chancellor Emeritus. Dr Watson’s comments, they said, were “reprehensible, unsupported by science...the laboratory condemns the misuse of science to justify prejudice.”

The defenestration has been a long time coming. Dr Watson had already been forced to leave active duty at Cold Spring Harbor after he told a British newspaper in 2007 that he was “inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa [because] all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours, whereas all the testing says, not really.” Although he wished everyone were equal, he said, “people who have to deal with black employees find this not true.” Though Dr Watson apologised for his comments at the time, his reputation suffered a big shock.

In the recent PBS film Dr Watson was asked if his views on links between race and intelligence had changed since 2007. “No, not at all,” he said, in an apparent reversal of his earlier apology. “I would like for them to have changed, that there be new knowledge that says that your nurture is much more important than nature. But I haven’t seen any knowledge. And there’s a difference on the average between blacks and whites on IQ tests. I would say the difference is, it’s genetic.’’ He adds that he takes no pleasure in “the difference between blacks and whites” and wishes it didn’t exist.

Well,no one batted an eyelid, when he said that diseases which have their source in the brain-depression or schizophrenia- may have a strong genetic component.

Watson's son suffers from schizophrenia and is unable to look after himself. Watson has gone on record as saying that had genetic screening for schizophrenia existed he would have aborted him.

And he has publicly revealed that he wishes a genetic test had been available which would have shown that his son Rufus would turn out to have schizophrenia. "I think I would be a monster to want someone to suffer the way he has... so, yes, I would have aborted him," he once said. Genetic screening, he says, would also inspire greater compassion for the underdog.

I remember the controversy the book "The Bell Curve" by Charles Murray caused.

There are differences, some subtle, some not, that are inherent in all races. To think that it applies to everything except cognitive function and IQ doesn't comport with common sense.

The whole thing is pretty good, but the controversial part starts at around 63 (1:03) minutes in, and he doubles down on it around 75 (1:15) minutes in. Interesting fellow, I respect that he doesn't back step for the sake of making people feel good.
