Don't knock it until you've tried it. If you travel somewhere where there are no tourist, that's likely because it is a "shithole" nobody wants to visit.
I hear there aren't many tourists these days in Detroit, Mi, just a bunch more folks about to be out of work.
i don't now how much travelling you've done in your time but the bolded is definitely not the case. it's about finding places that have not been discovered for too long or that the masses don't know about.
for instance, i went to koh samui for the 1st time around 20 years ago and believe me it was like a tropical paradise, great food, amazing beaches and landscape, great people. you could get a meal for 2 in a restaurant with drinks and get change from 10$. it was still well known at that time but not even 20% as developed and crowded as it is today (although i still love it). and i've spoken to people that went there 10 or 15 years before i first did and they say it was even way less developed then.
i've travelled to several countries in the far east, been to the caribbean several times, been to probably 10-15 european countries, a lot of places multiple times. once a place gets too well renowned and gets crawling with tourists it goes downhill. it becomes a tourist trap, the locals start catching on to how much money the tourists actually have and prices for everything goes up. they start to have contempt for the tourists as western tourists on the whole are complete @ssholes.
i hate to be anywhere crowded on holiday, i don't find that relaxing. with the exception of koh samui, i avoid anywhere that gets too crowded with tourists like the plague.
