Stefanos Miltsakakis. .....RIP
« on: February 02, 2019, 03:33:52 AM »
Not sure if this was ever posted. Passed away in his sleep at 59. Always played a bad guy in many Van Damme flicks. Great physique on the man too. Knew him in more of an acquaintance capacity over the years....incredible smart and humble. Was looking great still into his later years. Was in Den of Thieves with Gerard Butler last year. RIP.

Holy shit! No way! I remember him well back in the early/mid 1990s when I was training at Rickson's Academy. I was never a Van Dammed fan so I had no idea he was in movies until just now.

That guy was an absolute beast! He was jacked but didn't have the look of a bodybuilder. He had that natural kind of strength that you don't get in the gym but by his ancestors. It is with no shame to admit he would absolutely crush me.

Training with him was more character building for me because he didn't go easy on you and would hurt you and I had no chance. I never wanted to roll with him but never turned him down. It's easy to roll with someone you know you can handle. Not so much when they crush and hurt you. Like, I said, it was more for character building.

How did you get to know him? I thought he was interested in an MMA career. He had a few fights (three) and won them all. Never understood why he quit as we lost contact. I guess making movies is a better gig.

The only satisfaction I would get is when I would watch him train with Rickson. Rickson was fighting in Japan at the time and recruited Stephan to help him train. Like always, Stephan always went out for blood. But this time the tide was turned. Rickson would school him like a lion cub. I could see Stephan get pissed and frustrated but he was just nowhere near Rickson's level.

Nobody was at that time.

Heart attack?  I know 3 guys personally that died from heart attacks under 60.  All three were working out at the time. Two running and the third lifting.

One had a prior heart attack. He went out for a run and dropped dead. He was in his 40's. One of the nicest guys I ever met. Really cared about his friends well being.

The other was a real athlete and looked it. 6'4" muscular and lean. Same as the other. He went for run and died. They did CPR on him right away but he was gone. He was in his 40's. No prior health issues.

The last guy who was lifting was a gym rat. He too had no known health issues. He was in his late 50's.

One thing about working out. It one of the factors that lowers the risks to health and early death. It certainly is no cure all. Out of all your muscles the heart muscle is the most important. Even after a heart attack doctors often put heart patients on light cardio for rehab. If bodybuilder had a method to show off the heart muscle can you imagine how hard it would be trained?  Instead almost no consideration is given to it. I really believe that most professional bodybuilders would test lower than most men who do no exercise or little in a cardio fitness test.

A widow maker is when you get a big blockage at the beginning of the left main artery or the left anterior descending artery (LAD). They're a major pipeline for blood. If blood gets 100% blocked at that critical location, it's almost always fatal without emergency care.

I remember a 25 year old Russian skater died from one and this trainer Bob Harper. He got lucky a Dr was working out at his NYC gym. Many ignore symptoms like feeling dizzy (Bob fainted one time), shortness of breath at times, chest pain, light headedness, jaw pain, unexplained arm/shoulder pain with migraine.

Better to be safe than sorry if feeling symptomatic and get things checked.

Also worth noting is gear thickens blood and over time can lead to build up in these arteries.

If you knew Stephan it would be no shame to admit he kicked your ass. Only those who have never stepped on a mat and tested himself would think otherwise.

Regarding Harper my wife was a big fan of the show the Biggest Loser so it was always on in my house from the beginning. I clearly remember the season when he "got" muscles instead of being the thin fit guy. He always had a throbbing vein in his forehead he never had before. I'm just speculating he started using gear for the first time  that season. No he was never bodybuilder material but he gained so much muscle from the show's previous season. That just doesn't happen to guy that has supposedly was a gym rat. I'm guessing family history and gear contributed to his heart attack.

Regarding young athletes dying from heart attacks. It's usually from an electrical type and not from an artery clog.

True sudden cardiac death (arrhythmia's) occur most frequently in adults in their mid-30s to mid-40s, and affects men twice as often as it does women. This condition is rare in children, affecting only 1 to 2 per 100,000 children each year.
