GM to Lay Off 4,250 Salaried Workers Starting Monday

By Scott McDonald

General Motors Co. will lay off approximately 4,250 salaried workers over the next several weeks in a workforce reduction plan starting Monday. The layoffs are part of an overall process that also idling five plants and saving $2.5 billion in 2019 and saving a total of $6 billion by 2020.

In all, GM will cut about 8,0009 jobs, which includes salaried and contract workers. The company also has plans to trim its international executive workforce by 25 percent.

GM didn’t say which departments would get cut first, nor did it say in which order the cuts would happen. The plants expected to close in the next few weeks are Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly, Warren Transmission, Baltimore Operations and the Lordstown Assembly plant in Ohio.

agreed!  I’ve owned cars made by each one at some time or another and my Toyota beats them all by far.  In all fairness though my Toyota is also made here in Texas.

Engineered and designed in Japan who also oversees the American plant. I had a company car for many years to take home. They got me a new one every three years. I wasn't allowed to run personal errand with it. My personal car was a Toyota. I kept it for 17 years. Never anything but basic maintenance. Sold it to a college kid who drove it for another 5 years. He told me it ran perfect till the head gasket went. If you keep synthetic oil in a Toyota or Honda it will easily run 200k with few hiccups. It's always a surprise when I hear an American car has 200K. People act like it's a miracle. It happens but it's rare.

Same here. Ive had the same Honda for years and runs perfect. As long as I keep up with maintenance, never any major problems.

My 2008 Mustang passed 200K a few weeks ago. Just have to keep up with fluid changes.

I haven't noticed a whole lot of difference in american vs foreign made cars that have been made in the last 10 years or so. Seem to be pretty similar. Have had Dodge, Toyota, Chrysler, Honda, Kia.

Most American cars are made with foreign parts.

Many foreign cars assembled in USA.

All have had problems, recalls, etc.

Toyota has had massive recalls too.

Good.  Failed companies should go out of business.  Screw this "USA! USA!" bullcrap.  GM should've gone bankrupt many years ago, but government bailed them out, just like they did with the corrupt banks and insurance companies.

My 2007 Honda Accord is a great car... very minimal repairs since I've owned it.
