« on: February 10, 2019, 06:43:39 PM »

As of February 10th...

https://www.gofundme.com/robby-robinson-medical-support

My Good Friend and Fitness Legend Robby Robinson has been fighting Sickle cell Anemia his whole life. Currently at 73 he is at his toughest stage of the battle. Robby is having to undergo many medical procedures and blood transfusions. During this he is unable to continue his work as a Personal Trainer and Speaker. To help with the cost of his ongoing medical fight he is currently taking donations. I want to help him get well so he can keep helping other.

When was this video made? I literally just talked to Robby on Wednesday. I had no idea. He deserves all the respect and support we can give him.

Another way to support him is to buy his biography. It's  surprisingly a good read. You can buy it directly off his site or on Amazon.

Sucks to hear.  Hope he pulls through

I really enjoyed the hour long interview he did with RX a few weeks back.  Seems like a good down to earth guy!

A sickle cell crisis is no joke.  My roommate in a hospital had SCA.
At first I thought he was an older gentleman but it turned out he was in his early 20s.
He was just so reduced by his condition.

He also just did a video with Palumbo a couple weeks ago. It was via facetime or whatever and he had a big booger sticking out half of the time, but he looked fine  :(

Robbie is one of my all time favorites so I'm hoping he pulls through. It would suck to lose another all time great after Corney.

A friend of a friend was born with sickle cell. Doctors said he wouldn’t live past early 20s.

He died last year at 33 due to heart complications as a result of the disease.

Robby talked about a heart condition during his prime I remember. Maybe a result of sickle cell.

Sorry to hear ....  the first Master Olympia champ, He is a legend no doubt,  questions that always come to mind:
Does he have kids? has he ever been married ? had a full time job.... like ever ?

I always had the impression he has never owned a house or an apartment (my impression)

He rents a room and live the bohemian life" that's how he's perceived  .... which is cool but you can't expect to have medical coverage under those terms ...

Grow up people. No one lives forever. Robby has already exceeded his life expectancy and his competition days are behind him. Why can’t anyone just pass gracefully instead of begging for money for treatment, surgery or hospital bills?

He should have medical coverage through the VA because he is a veteran.

In the interview, Dave said he had VA coverage but it won't cover sickle cell. Have no idea why.

Could be.

The friend of a friend was rushed to the hospital and died on his way there.

At least Robby lasted this long.

How did he get in the military with sickle cell?  Hope he pulls through.

Late 60's early 70's. Maybe he had no symptoms in his youth and he wasn't screened for that medically. Back then the medical screening for the military was a joke.

Anything could be going on here insurance wise. The VA definitely sometimes denies claims that are not service related or because of preexisting conditions that were not evident at time of entry into service. So could be a denial of claim based on these sorts of VA technicalities. If he also has Medicare (which some veterans may not), Medicare can have huge copays depending on whether the insured has a Medicare Part B and a Medicare supplement policy or not. In other words, it is very plausible that there are significant uncovered expenses, but exactly why that’s the case could be any number of factors.

Is Robby begging for money or is it his friends who are asking for help for him. Moreover, who are you to play god by deciding when Robby's outlived his life expectancy? Passing "gracefully" is easier imagined than experienced. The will to live is innate in all of us, even in those who seem to want to end it all. You mentioning that his competition days are over has to be a joke or you're just being an asshole.

IroNat: the clip said he has VA

MPH: I'm not there age-wise yet, but my dad is a vietnam vet.  He got diagnosed with a "mild" cancer a few years ago.  He and I aren't close, but I asked my mom why the hell they were paying for things through supplemental med insurance when he's a vet and could go to the VA?  She said he told her long ago, that he'd rather use health insurance/medicare than choosing the VA which led me to believe it's an either or thing?  ???  Maybe someone who's a Vet can clear that up?

Here is what I think is the case: veterans are always entitled to VA care which has some limitations. For example, you can only go to a VA facility. Also, there are some instances (as may be the case with Robby)  where the VA denies your claim and then you are shit out of luck as they say. Veterans are also encouraged to sign up for Medicare Part A and Part B at some additional expense, which many of them do (maybe most of them) and, if so, they can go anywhere for their care. Thus, many veterans have BOTH VA coverage and Medicare. But even with Medicare, there can be big coverage gaps (e.g., you did not sign up for Part B or you don’t have a Medicare supplement policy). Any mixture of these issues could be Robby’s problem and I don’t doubt for a minute he has big bills.
