Tesla finally releases $35,000 model
« on: March 01, 2019, 07:27:05 AM »
Stripped down with lower mileage (220 full charge), cloth seats, weaker sound system, fewer inputs, slower acceleration (5.2) but still get an additional $3750 rebate bringing cost to about $31k. I’d say Venom Vince just might be trading in that old Jag soon!

These are still impressive numbers.

For comparison:

The Nissan Leaf has 226 miles range for $30,875 with a zero to 60 of 7.5 seconds.
The Chevrolet Bolt has 238 miles range for $36,600 with a Zero to 60 of 6.3 seconds.

I think the Tesla easily beats the competition and offer more value and brand cool factor.  When I look at the model 3 I just see a smaller version of the model S and it's instantly recognizable as a Tesla.  That's a win for Tesla considering the S is an $80,000 car.

It will be interesting to see what Volkswagen offers to counter the model 3.

Tesla’s $35K Model 3 Arrives Fashionably Late
By Tim Healey on February 28, 2019

The $35,000 Model 3 is here. Fittingly, perhaps, it’s three years late.

Tesla has promised a $35,000 version of the Model 3 since announcing the car in 2016, but the company focused on more-expensive variants at first to help get the model off the ground without tanking the company in the process. It needed the large profit margins from the higher-priced Model 3 to help the company turn a profit for back-to-back quarters for the first time.

Now you’ll be able to buy multiple versions of a Standard Range trim. The base version of which will be available for $35,000 and have a 130-mph top speed and a range of 220 miles. Zero to sixty should take 5.6 seconds.

Two grand more nets you a Standard Range Plus trim that adds 20 miles of range, up to 240. It will have a slightly higher top speed of 140 mph and shave the 0-60 time down to 5.3 seconds.

There will be two interior upgrade packages made available, with the mid-level upgrade being part of the Standard Range Plus trim. The premium interior upgrade won’t be available on the Standard Range cars at all.

The Standard Range car will have a stripped down interior — manual seat and steering adjustments, cloth seats, base radio, and four USB ports. By contrast, the Standard Range Plus interior will have 12-way power heated front seats, nicer seating materials, up-level audio, LED fog lamps, and docking for two smartphones. Both will have standard navigation via the center tablet.

If you order your car online today, it will be delivered in a claimed two-to-four weeks. However, you’ll have to do your ordering via the Internet — Tesla’s sales are going online and most of its physical stores will close, although some should remain open as product showcases. The company claims a 6-percent savings on each unit because of the change.

Tesla will also now give you seven days or 1,000 miles to return any of its cars and get a full refund.

Lastly, a firmware update is going out that will bump the range on the longest-range Model 3 to 325 miles, while the highest-performance 3 will now have a top speed of 162 miles.

They're closing almost all their physical stores and converting all sales to online.  :-\

These Teslas will be full of bugs.

And to get those bugs fixed in a timely fashion will be impossible.

However, even though it will be stuck in your garage just about all the time you can tell your friends you own one.

The VW I.D. or Neo is a FWD hatchback. Such type of cars are less popular in the USA.

Whichever way you look at it, Tesla is very impressive. Volvo's new Polestar 2 is virtually a copy of all that Tesla has started.
And the Germans and Japanese are years behind the game.

Tesla is revolutionary. True, there's still a lot that can be improved, but it is the first mass production car company to become succesful since Porsche in the 1950's

Let me say I’m no expert
Only from what I’ve heard & read Tesla have only kept afloat by owing suppliers Billions of $
As well as other financial issues - Still a lot of predictions regarding them going pop.
Didn’t Tesla post the Biggest ever quarterly Loss last Year.
- I’d hardly call them a success just yet.

The Germans and Japanese are working very rapidly in the background to catch up to Tesla.

I was thinking more of a superconducting torus...An engineer for Reliant told me that an automotive power plant based on it would have an energy density similar to gasoline engines.

First you have to invest billions in new models, before you can recoup that investment. Model Y, Semi, new Roadster and especially the Tesla Pick up truck are not cheap to develop.
Once EV's are cheaper than comparable gas models, things might develop even faster

I can't remember ever have seen a car brand with such influence and disruptive nature. Electric power is the biggest change since....well, the Ford Model T?

With RIVIAN getting an investment by Amazon, which is quite spectacular news. A complete outsider to the car world investing in a start up? Wow.

Dyson will start producing electric cars in Singapore. Amazing times, nearly every months there's very surprising news! Cool to see it all happening and changing
(I drive a 5 cilinder diesel)

I think that Elon has done some amazing stuff but nothing has actually made $$ since Paypal. His promises are about to wear out their welcome. Tesla had first mover advantage but seems to have squandered it.

Ford releases FIVE variants of the Mach-E electric car - starting at 43k and due out in 2020.
