If they settle with a quick $5 million, it will still cost far less than the cost of protracted litigation.
Maybe the lawyer is annoyed by this sort of BS continually happening to innocent people, and wants to use his resources to send a message. So if they don't settle, he will keep fighting until CNN and the Washington Post need to shell out $10 million in defense. Making a $5 million quick payout a rational thing to do.
Unless the lawyer of the Covington Catholic teenagers or the teenagers themselves would be obligated to pay for their legal defense. Given how reprehensible CNN and WAPO were here, I think this case is reasonable, and I believe Getbig's own Ron Avidan was involved in such a case where he DID win, but since the judge deemed the case to be reasonable, whatever company Ron was working for at the time [American Bodybuilding supplements - ABB?], the company was still required to cover their own legal expenses.
I'm not exactly sure how this works, but without any question, some of these Jewish media networks absolutely broke the law.
Even AFTER the facts were known, Bill Maher trashed these kids for doing nothing but smiling awkwardly as some toothless POS Native American got in their faces, putting the lives of these kids at risk in the process.
That's kind of a big deal.
I would like to see how this unfolds, but I can't fathom a world where these kids would be forced to pay any damages here. My guess is that both CNN and WAPO will agree to a much smaller settlement - say, $5 million each - just to make this case go away.
Maybe the lawyer of the kids will ask to have that increased to $10 million, and they will agree, and close the case.
Conversely, it will cost even more money fighting this in court, given how long it could take to close this case - and it may well end in favour of the Covington Kids.
Remember Peter Thiel's destruction of Gawker, when he funded Hulk Hogan's lawsuit.
Gawker was awful - and I was happy to see it get destroyed.
