Looking back on it I wonder how many cashiers at the checkout thought we were all closet gays buying gay porn?

the musclemag with the cover shot of Bob Paris and his partner Rod Someone was their lowest selling issue at the time. they did a follow up chastising the fan base because of it lol

I told you motherfuckers this thread is closed. It will not be revisited. Every other cover photo of an arm shot doesn't even exist compared to this 41 year old cover photo.  The end. Class dismissed.

I remember the classifieds from Muscle Mag had bodybuilders you could hire to "wrestle" with you.  I could figure out even at a young age that the women on top of the guy straddling his face was something sexual going on but was naive enough to wonder why you would hire some guy for that. :-[

The early ('74?) Musclemag had a weird ass feature on the last page.  It was some dude posing naked and I think it was called "All Of Us".  Kennedy was a bit odd at times and thought he was being artisitic but I think he was just catering to homosexuals.  I had gotten the magazine and sent in my subscription card (it had to go all the way to Canada) and then read the magazine from front to back and then I saw that last page...

Seeing that, I wasn't so certain I wanted that magazine but if I recall correctly, it was only six issues a year at the time..  I would up reading mostly Ironman and Muscle Builder/Power with the former being more content driven and the latter being ego (i.e., Weider) driven.

Kennedy used to promote the more Steve Reeves type of physique and one time featured some hilarious looking dude named Wifried Dubbels on the cover and within the pages.  Kennedy claimed to not much care for heavily muscled physiques but later came out with that stupid back page photo shot, "Beef It!".  That was Cirque du SoGhey.

I threw out all my magazines but I kept Rader's.  I have issues from the 60's, 70's  and 80's. I should read them again. They sit pristine in a giant Tupperware container. Wish I kept my early Weider mags but I threw them out almost embarrassed by how many I accumulated from when I was 8 years old to a young adult. My now wife confesses now she was really shocked how into lifting and magazines I was in my early twenties.  Her four brothers were into baseball, football and basketball. She was never exposed to any male in her life that was remotely interested in a sport of  tanned oiled up men in speedos posing to music.  ;D Now through the eyes of a man and not a kid I understand what bodybuilding is. It's a sport based on drug use. Without drugs the sport would be a hidden subculture. There is not one pro that would look remotely like they look on stage without the assist. I bet Larry Scott no matter how much he lifted wouldn't have weighed over 175lbs without drugs. Zane maybe 170lbs. I could go on.

Yes, I threw out all my muscle mags from the 80's and 90's over a decade ago when I became a minimalist and got rid of all my junk.  I had hundreds of mags and for years believed the nonsense as well.  Peary Radar's articles actually worked for natties although they had an element of bullshit as well.  Ironman's programs were much more sensible to follow though and Radar himself made a great transformation in physique with some of the worst genetics for bodybuilding ever.
