I read through that quickly, and my take is that a young Leo was likely questioning his sexuality when that interview occurred.....but that questioning was based on what I posted above in this reply.  I don't know anything about the Dallas Observer, but that article seemed very pro gay agenda.  The article was essentially based off an a qoute from him as a kid to another publication, and the opinion of a writer that clearly wanted him being gay to be true.
