What you're referring to is NOT the Southern Strategy

The southern strategy was the Republican plan (starting around 1968) to use fear on topics like bussing and segregation to appeal to southern voters.   They didn't deny it.  They talked about it openly and the head of the RNC (Ken Melhman even tried to apologize for it to the NACCP in 2005).  Here is Lee Atwater (another Republican scumbag) talking about it.

What you're referring to (and denying) are the Dixiecrats which was 20 years prior to the Southern Strategy (which started going under that term during the Nixon era and beyond)
