Study says single joint exercise is worthless.
« on: May 12, 2019, 12:56:21 AM »
Does this make sense? Curls and tricep extensions worthless? Leg extensions/ leg curls worthless?

http://www.ergo-log.com/anabolic-steroids-single-joint-exercises-training-routine.html

"If bodybuilders already target a muscle with a multi-joint exercise, then it makes little sense to also train this muscle with a single-joint exercise. This also applies to bodybuilders who have been training with weights for years, and also to bodybuilders who use anabolics," report Brazilian sports scientists in the Journal European Journal of Sport Science.

I trained for years doing no direct arm work following the abbreviated training routines stuart mcrobert was putting out, arms lagged seriously bad without any direct work adding in curls, pushdowns bb extensions ect made a massive difference .

Brazilian scientist...  ::) Faulty study. 30 people leads to too much variation. And also they should only target one muscle group to make the study more specific and precise.

Need to have thousands of test subjects. Ie. 1000 people test subjects doing exclusive multijoint excercise, 1000 test subjects doing single joint excersices. And then compare bicep measurements before/after study. Diet being the same for all people in the group. Rep range the same. Exact same conditions for all test subjects.

Ex. one test of 1000 people group doing pullups Only.

One group of 1000 people doing concentration curls, hammer curls, wide grip curls, close grip curls.

Then after 3 months, compare bicep measurement before/after.

Basically I question the scientists knowlage/real-world-experience in targeting the arms muscles in single joint excersises to make this study valid.

This.  It's amazing what passes for science these days.

Many useless exercises, tricep kick-backs, tricep rope extensions, etc.
Many with no muscle do these useless things.

For a BB who has huge mass there already, and getting ready for a show, OK, they may help w/ some detail.
For twinks trying to put on mass, useless stuff. Close grip bench, nose-breakers, etc. That will build mass.

Rope push-downs = the ghey.

Brazilian study? It’s automatically skewed as half the test group injected oil and lifted nothing

I look at it like this. Multiple joint exercises are the best. The body does nothing in isolation athletically. A power clean and jerk is the king of weight lifting exercises if you want to increase you capabilities in the majority of athletic events. Isolation is a supplement to a multiple joint exercise so they have their role. The worst thing you can do if you are an athlete is to try to isolate various muscles thinking they will work better as a whole.  Bill Starr who was one of the original  NFL strength coaches said the core for a football player should be the power clean, pressing motion like a bench or military press and a squat. Anything else is a supplement and extra.

The study said the subjects did not become stronger, but bodybuilders do single joint exercises for aesthetic reasons as well. So you can’t just make the statement that they’re useless.

I think they have their terminology a little different than ours. Very little about bodybuilding-type training is multi-joint anyway and mostly single joint/isolation. The training of Athletes on the other hand is almost all multi-joint and it only makes sense since the human body works multi-planar multi-joint. Study seems backwards

The point of lifting weights for team sports is to simply improve general strength.

A good example was the steroid era in baseball. Guys like Maguire were into bodybuilding. They did the basic movements. Took some gear. As a result, they were able to hit the ball father. Home run totals increased.

I agree, a lot of these guys will do super isolated excercises 5-6 days a week and generate nothing in muscular size and strength.
