To the guys that have seen him train, it's true he trained for muscular endurance with light to moderate weights? I keep hearing this but nothing is better than an eye witness account.

I trained at Golds from 1988-1994 around the same time as Flex, Cormier, and some third guy in that posse who was also jacked but I didn't know his name. Dillet mostly trained alone and sometimes with his girlfriend.

When people say, or rather, when I say, that he trained like a pussy you have to put it in context. I was a Mentzer/Jones guy. I trained at an all male old time gym where guys busted their balls. Ray Mentzer would often come in and move some very heavy weights with real intensity. A guy name Benny Podda would push himself so hard that often when doing squats blood would squirt out of his nose. I watch Casey Viator go through a Nautilus circuit. I see pictures and hear about the exploits of Platz. Watch Corney collapse after a set of squats on PI.

And here you have this freak of nature, Paul Dillet. Just beyond mind-blowing in
person. He didn't just do pump sets while holding a towel in his mouth. He trained and he trained consistently. He was there every time I was there. I just expected more.
That's the rub. You expect more because of how he looked. But there was nothing inspiring about Flex's training either other than watching such a perfect specimen's muscles flex and relax. Now Cormier was different. He was more intense than the rest but again, nothing you didn't see in gyms across the country back in those days. We trained harder in high school doing overhead drop sets with the 60 dumbells all the way down to the 20s.

You expected to see some tonnage being tossed around, and some grunting and groaning, gritting teeth and beads of forehead sweat. He trained. He trained in a way that most people couldn't maintain consistently for very long. But you just expected more. You expected him to get "nasty" as Dorian's partner would say.

I wondered if it would have made any difference. He didn't need to get bigger which harder more intense training presumably does. Maybe if he was just stricter and more discipline with his diet coming in harder and drier.

Actually, I would have much preferred that pic to be just of Dillet alone. I just wanted a semi-relax shot to show the muscle there. It was just unfortunate that the particular pic he was standing next to one of the greatest head to toe back shot that ever existed.
I was hoping it would be understood that I did not intend a comparison with Dorian as that would be foolish but just Dillet on his own.

What was interesting was how Nasser El Sonbaty in 1995/1996 put an end to the “Dillett is a freak” talk. At that time Nasser took over that role.


A few years later, Ronnie Coleman and Markus Ruhl took over the “Freak” role.


Dillett could not keep up. He was too lazy.

Sometimes I think consistency in training takes you further than killing it then taking many days off. If you're training consistently then you can't kill it every workout.  Reminds me when I was a sprinter in college. I always had the work ethic to leave it all out there on the track on training days and the weight room. I would look at some of the guys that had dog it days and think they had no work ethic.  Those guys had consistent times while mine were erratic and unpredictable. I admire guys like Yates and Mentzer who killed it every workout. Then you have guys like Lee Haney who left some in the tank for the next work but killed it on occasion.

Anyway thanks for answering the question. I trained in the same gym as Pro John Hnatyschak back in the day. I thought he trained with very moderate weights. I put it into context. One guy at my gym relayed the story of the time he use to watch Chris Dickerson train. He thought he was using light weights until he trained with him. The first couple of sets didn't seem that taxing but when got to set five and set six or an exercise that light weight felt like a ton. He had to throw in the towel training with him. I think he was trying to convey is that running with a world class marathoner seems doable for about 400 to 800 meters before exhaustion hits and then you realize they are doing it for 26 miles.
