At least 19 people, including eight schoolchildren, have been stabbed at a bus stop near Tokyo, according to media reports.

The attacker, thought to be in his 40s or 50s, knifed 19 people using two knives in Kawasaki, Japan, at 7.45am today (11.45pm yesterday BST).

At least three victims, including a child, are thought to be gravely injured.

He then stabbed himself in the neck and is now thought to be unconscious. He has been taken in to custody.

Gun laws in Japan are some of the strictest in the entire world. There are laws against owning a gun, owning bullets, and discharging a firearm. Basically, any sort of interaction with guns is illegal in Japan, unless you’re licensed, or with the police or military.

Crime is really low in Japan.  One woman I read left her pocketbook on a train and it was there the next day just where she left it with everything in place in it. That mass stabbing is really an anomaly.
